Tutorial: Replacing the Dyson DC24 Brush Bar Motor.
« on: March 05, 2011, 03:35:10 pm »
How to change the brush bar motor on your Dyson DC24 ball:

Many people have asked us for this, so I thought I would put one together (Reading guests will need to make a free account on the forum to see all the images).

Start by removing the cleaner head which is done by removing the c-shaped clip as shown here:

You actually do it from the front, using the little cut out, but I am doing it from the back here to better show you the clip in question. When you have removed the clip, the head unit comes off like so:

Look on the underside, there is a rubber strip. Pull it out and put it to one side (as there are screws underneath it). Your next job is to undo the nine screws with a T10 torx screwdriver. Here are their locations:

Having done that, release the end cap. I use a two pence coin.........

Having removed the end cap, you can now take out the brush roll:

Now you can split the unit like so:

Now you need to unclip the circuit board. There is a little clip that releases it as shown:

This allows you to split the unit a little further:

Now you can unplug the motor from the circuit board.

There is now one screw holding the motor in place. It is a T8 torx screw.

Having undone that, the motor comes out. Replacing your motor is simply a reverse sequence of what you have just done. During disassembly and reassembly, be aware of the location of the red "reset" button and make sure it goes back in it's correct position on the side of the head.

We keep not only the motors, but also the screwdrivers. If you want to order a brush roll motor, you can do so from here: >>>DC24 Spare Parts<<<

Comments and questions are welcome.

Do you know what voltage the DC24 brushroll motor runs on? so we can test the motor.
Or how can you tell if the motor or the PCB (or both) is at fault?

I recently bought a DC24 knowing the brush bar wasn't turning. So, I changed the motor as per your instructions and it still doesn't work  :'(

I can only think it's the PCB. If anyone knows where I can buy a PCB, or can think of anything else what could be wrong PLEASE HELP ME and post on here!

Cheers SW

We will likely dig you out a used PCB. We can get new ones as well I think. Give Claire at the shop a call or a mail.

Next time, check the output to the motor is live.  :-X

We have today added the DC24 PCB and reset module to the site.

If you need it you can get one here DC24 Spare Parts.

Also on our DC24 page, brushrolls have come down in price by £3 and brushroll motors have come down by £5 due to bulk buying discounts we are able to pass along.

Soleplates are now available in case you happen to need one while your cleanerhead is in bits.

They are £17.99 from our shop here: DC24 Soleplate

Very nice!

Going by the dc24 I had that worked, doing this and cleaning the motor off fluff will prolong its life hopefully.

The motor in mine was full of fluff, it must have been making it hot. If you want to go even more a good rinse in brake cleaner will do it!

Hi all

Just replaced the brushbar motor on my (old) DC24 - went smoothly enough except:

1. The new motor had a rubber jacket that was slightly larger than the old one, preventing the 2 halves of the cleanerhead assembly from mating properly. Soon rectified by trimming off the excess rubber with a craft knife.
2. The drive boss for the brushbar itself was a different shape on the new motor - rectified by swapping the boss from the old motor  (held on by T8 screw) onto the new motor (boss held on by x-head).

Anyway, up & running now so well pleased.
