We have a 1960's Hoover Junior!
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:20:06 pm »
Yes, you read that right. We came by this recently from a pensioner who lives near our shop who decided it was time to upgrade to a Dyson. We got it off it him in part exchange just because we hadn't seen one for years and it's a bit "Life on Mars".

So here it is. We have stripped it down and cleaned it a little, lubricated the bearings etc and made sure it is all working fine. (Click the photos to see full size pictures).

It comes with all the original Hoover attachments (see the photos), a packet of spare belts and a couple of packets of bags.

Of course, as its a 1960's - 1970's item, we cannot offer a warranty on it other than to say it is working just fine now. Since I don't have a clue what it is worth, I have just put in on an eBay auction listing with a 99p start and we'll see what happens.  :chuckle:

I assumed it was a 1970's one. It looked like the ones I remember as a kid. However, a guy on eBay sent me an email that said:

Quote
Hi, it is actually an early to mid 1960s Hoover Junior. The styling of the 1970s Hoover Junior was different from the one you have for sale. The styling of the Hoover Junior changed in 1967 with the introduction of model 1346.

I love how some folk are so knowledgeable on this stuff.  :icon_nod:

It will be fun to see if it is worth anything...........

Thats great
I have one of those two, I have a collection of old vacuums , the oldest been a 1925's Electrolux , Its so old it pre dates any record keeping at Electrolux SA .
I collect them refurb them and stick them on display in the show room , It creates allot of interest.

A freind of mine bought a 1952 hoover senior , but a particularly rare one It could run on both AC or DC , as I have one aswell I didn't bother with it and he sold it to a guy in Chicago for 500 dollers go figure,
At least now I know what to do if business is to slow and I need to pay wages  ;D

I was half tempted to go totally to town on this one and strip it right down and get the metal parts powder coated etc., and put it somewhere in the shop. But then they would only ask why we have an old Hoover in a Dyson shop. And they would have a point.

Actually, we serviced one of these for an old chap a while back. I was surprised to learn that the outer bag, the bellows below them and all kinds of stuff is still freely available for them. I think brush rolls were obsolete, so we just changed the bearings and the brushes that all come separately, and are still available.   :o

If you look carefully online on the Inside dyson you will see the newer model of that machine on display at dyson's head quaters.
Turns out it was the junior that james used to develope his cyclone system.

So you could say to customers that if it wasn't for one of these hoovers's not working properly the "dyson" wouldn't have come to be

These things are like buses (you wait ages and then they all come at once). An old lady brought us in today a Hoover Senior that she had had from new. Sometime in the early 1960's I an guessing!  :o

I haven't seen one of these since I was learning to fix vacuum cleaners back in the 1980's. It has a headlight like a car on the front when you turn it on!  :icon_nod:

It had stopped working so we took the top off for a peek around..........

Turns out all that was wrong with it was the power cable. The belt had seen better days too and was due to snap any moment. Our supplier miraculously had the belts in! We swapped the power cable (soldering the original healthy long connection terminals back on and heat shrinking the seals afterwards). We took the precaution of updating the cable to a twin and earth and grounding it at a suitable place in the machine. These machines were made with two core cable which is is verboten nowadays on a machine with metal external parts. It is now fixed up now and good to go, and no doubt will be just fine for another five years! The motor sounded sweet and had no sparks after forty odd years!

I wonder if we will still be fixing Dyson DC01's in twenty years?

Stop Press: Our little Hoover Junior has just made £58.99 (plus shipping) on eBay.

I think that's a pretty respectable price for a machine that is older than me!  :o

Good old Hoover Junior. Obviously some people value them still!

This one will be going to a gentleman in Neath Port Talbot in Wales.

Thats a Hoover 652 they last forever.
If its got a new belt on it and new brush strips ( still available here from Quаltex ) then you must see them work.
they beat the carpet so well that you can actually see the sand in the carpet bounce up infront of the machine.
When I was learning to fix vacuums these things would be brught in by Litle old lady's for a service every year .

I have a mint one in the shop

Hi all

My first post on this forum...

First of all let me say, I was the one that bought the Hoover junior that Manchester vacs put up on eBay

And bought the little old junior because I remember it being the first Hoover I ever used, and eventually  did my first repairs on, age around 11!

Now due to lack of space  The Hoover is up for sale it has only been used a few times, just to transport my inner kid back all those years!

Any one interested. Please let me know

Martin

A lady brought one of these in a couple of weeks ago and it needed a motor. Although everything seems to be available for them - motors are not. At least, not where we get stuff from.  :(

I liked it for that reason too!
