My DC14 motor exploded, it was YDK and a late model (The dark body and white cyclone type with red switch and wand collar)
Some metal bits were under the post filter, lots in the housing and some of the plastic had melted in the housing

Easy done, quite sneaky at times those motors  :D

Yep, I won't buy a DC24 for anything over a tenner without hearing it run, and when I quoted one for a service recently, I took the post filter out, turned it on and nearly blinded myself. The owner looked shocked, that was a very easy way to sell in a new motor too.

Sniffing/looking at the post filter, especially an 04/7/14 is an easy way too, smelling it can work sometimes. Again, I always pop the cover off (screwdriver kept in the car) infront of the owner to prove the point.

I had to swallow a baseplate on a dc07 once, didn't turn it over, just sold in a refurb. Got home, turned it over and half the bloody baseplate was missing Bought the cheapest one I could off ebay (non clutched) and it was an arse to fit. Worked fine though, and only cost me £7, but again, quick look underneath with the owner

We have a few of the genuine heavy duty DC04 Constant Max motors left, YV-511 02 on our site. At £39 delivered, they are excellent value I think and will last years, and fit any DC04 with a YDK.

So whats the difference between a YV511 and a 2200? I've got some YV511 sat here that I have taken out of some DC04's, can I put these in a DC07 or DC14 and get the same suction?

I've shoved loads of 511's into DC07's having been tested in a DC04 tilted back so the brush bar is engages for 15 minutes (putting the motor under load) and had no come backs.

With DC14's, if the motor is serviceable after being tested in the same way, I pull it and stick it in a DC07 and fit a Qtex MTR240 into the DC14. That way I can justify asking more for the DC14.

Funnily enough, I had a young lady call me today saying she could hardly push the DC14 I sold her yesterday. I explained it was due to the new, more powerful motor being used on good thick carpets. HOWEVER, she asked if she could bring it back and pay extra for a DC33 as it looked lighter. My DC33's also have MTR 240's fitted so we may have the same problem! If so I'll remove the seals from the head to reduce suction.
That was a tip from Stuart at Mvacs - TA!

I once has a really powerful DC14 origin and when I sold it I took out the soleplate seals and kept them for myself ;D

I tried my neighbour's DC33 on my thick bedroom carpet and it couldn't be pushed. It's because of the large debris channel bumper lip thing it somehow manages to dig into the carpet and make ther vacuum hard to push so something like a DCXX origin is easier to push

Speaking of motors, I finally got round to getting my DC07 a new motor
It said MTR299 in the box somewhere IIRC (last week) And the suction is great, sounds a little fake though and when you turn it off, the motor is literally dead in silence after about 2 and a half second whereas a genuine Dyson motor takes about  5 seconds. They gave me contact details so if it does blow up (I have no idea how long it will last) then I will tell them that it blew up and its not even a year old.

PS :off_topic: Is it me or do the lime green and grey Dc04 motors seem indestructible? They are tanks, I rarely ever see them burnt out yet I have seen clutched YDK DC04s with  burnt out motors, would be interesting to see the lifespan of a brand new constant max motor vs a brand new Ametek DC04 lime motor, think that would be interesting
Ive had 4 YDK blow up on me and 0 Ametek blow up, All the Ameteks ive had have worked for many, many many years, The only YDK dyson I have that hasn't seen a motor change is my 4 month old DC04 I boought from Dyson Revivers for £45 fully refurbed, they did a 3 point check when I had it and changed the nice orignal power cord for a grey one, 1 month of having it i'd dropped a Purple Chassis on it and emaild man vacs for a purple and green power cord, got the power cord on it the second I got a knock knock on the door, it was the cord packed nicely inside a cardboard box, do belive the box was for a motor because it has YV-XXXX written on the side of the box, cant rememver if it was 511 or 2200 though': I had fitted it and tested it within 10

  • English? I'm never going to England!
    • Some dirty pics ;)
Resurrecting the dead here, but my 14 is going on 8 or 9 years at this point so I know a new motor is on the horizon.  I would rather pay a premium to get the most powerful motor available.  How can I identify these (besides the higher price)?  I'm assuming that flat stated wattage isn't enough, either.

never used aftermarket: but the MTR-299 sounds like a good motor from reviews.
