Welcome to the site Bendini.
This is something we have been looking at recently. Indeed, on
Angus's blog site, there was this comment from a chap:
This motor is available from dyson as the brushbar drive for a DC18. It comes with a removable gearbox which can be swapped for the belt cog here. It’s about £35 + postage
Angus replied:
That’s not strictly correct Mark. Whilst the DC18 and the DC15 have the same DC771(2)XLLG motor as the DC25, the top cog differs on other applications.
If you look at the photo above, you will see that the cog on the DC25 motor has teeth that are at 90 degrees to the motor. On other applications, the motor drives a gearbox so an oblique direction of the teeth is used maximise torque. That means one wont fit the other.
We haven’t yet figured out a way to change the cog so one version can be used with the other without stripping the motor down to swap the main shaft. To do that is so labour intensive that you may as well buy a complete cleaner head.
If you know different, please enlighten us.
A few days ago, we had a scrap DC18 brush roll motor from a customers machine, so we stripped it down as the numbers are indeed the same on the side of the unit. We took off the gearbox and looked at the cog. The teeth do run different. As they do on the DC15. We were hoping to find a back-door fix to the non-availability of the DC25 brush roll motor.
Swapping the motor shaft is well beyond the average guy who might strip his cleaner head down. Even our tech pulled this face
when I asked him about it. We even tried a bearing puller to get the angled cog from the shaft on the DC18 one with the hope of swapping it with the DC25 one - but no joy. It didn't budge.
I am all ears if we can find a fix for this. I think it is a bit pants that Dyson refuse to make available the DC25 brush roll motor. We sell loads of DC25 cleaner head units, and being a
Dyson only part, we make almost nothing on them (especially not after six quid to send one). I would rather help people find a more cost effective solution if at all possible. We managed to do that with DC05 and DC08 Matsushita/Panasonic-to-YDK motor conversions that we pioneered.
There is an official distributor of Johnson motors just a few miles from our shop. I am going to call in there in January with the one we want, and see if they can help out. I am doubtful though, as I expect Dyson have them tied to a
non-supply-to-others agreement. You can buy the basic motor - sans cog - on its own though; it looks like this:
But how on earth do you swap that cog?
Anyone else reading this who has any thoughts or experience on this subject, please chime in. Lets chew this over and find a fix.
