DC17 Animal ubend assembly

A friend took my Dyson apart to unclog it and now it has no suction.
Checking the Ubend assembly, I notice one end doesn't connect to anything. It's just open. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Is something missing?

On most machines, the u-bend connects to the upright hose on one end and the machine at the other.
It would be helpful if you could post a photo of what you have?
