A few other genuine bits from my hoarded pile in the attic.

Yes, that's a 900744-01 brand new Ametek motor.  8)

I haven't got a red cradle unfortunately, so a grey one it will have to be.

I found an "as new" (round plug) original flex, and a back hose in the right colours.

So in goes the motor.........

I also found a new cable protector and stretch protector.

The cleaner head is buffed up, new brushroll, new furniture guard.............

Time to dig out some tools. Best I can manage is a set all in purple. Brush tool is new (with early script on), the others are clean used.

Yes, I am getting a bit anal now I know............

And eventually, we are back together again.

Its come out quite well. The stickers on top are not perfect, but I decided to leave them for originality. It still wants a bit of final cleaning and polishing, but its probably as good as an 18 year old DC01 is going to be. I certainly dont remember the last time we used so many new parts on one.

Of course, it now works perfectly and runs very quiet because of the new motor.  :icon_nod:

I think we'll have to do a Ralph Fiennes one next. I found a genuine back hose new in the box I want to put on something.......... :chuckle:

Yes, if I see a red cradle, it will get it (the grey one is the last of our new genuine Dyson ones though). The wand we used is perfect apart from a hairline crack on the side (as they do). If I find a better one I will swap it.

We could have polished more scratches out maybe, but how far do you go? We used G3 and the buffer on most of it anyway - which took about two hours. Red and purple components are actually quite challenging to get looking nice. Grey is much more forgiving.

I think we have a pretty nice - albeit not perfect - machine now. We used a new motor (which nobody has any more), brushroll, bin and insert, soleplate cradle, furniture guard, cable protector, cable stretch protector, brush tool and of course new HEPA filter and pre-filter. We used "as new" (which means the absolute best of the best of the last maybe 50 machines we broke) flex, back hose, soleplate carrier and other bits.

Is it perfect? No it isn't. I'd maybe polish out more scratches. The tool adaptor and crevice tool have some marks. There is a break in the Dyson logo on the cleaner head. I'd prefer a better wand and newer wheels. But on the whole, its quite nice. Better than most. Much better than "reconditioned" needs to be.

What did it cost? Hard to say. The original machine was a fiver in a deal. Do we add the new parts at value or cost? Some bits we had in old stock bulk deals, so they probably cost nothing [to us] balanced against what we sold from the deal. But worth is probably a better valuer. What is a new Ametek motor worth? We recently got £50 for a new, boxed DC02 one.

Time? I reckon five hours. Pay a fella £10 per hour and that is £50. Add the value of the motor, and the original cost of the machine, and we are up to £105.

Add various new (or as new) parts....... especially the red HEPA filter bin flap, the new cyclone bin, and we soon pass £200.  :o

This machine is worth more in bits.

If I sold it for £175 I would likely lose money. So we keep it in the attic...........

Nice display shelf/cabinet on the wall with this and some modern one in would make a nice feature!

I wouldnt go anymore ott on the polishing either, too much and you'll run the risk of clouding the plastic or melting it completely!

Indeed the plan is when we move or expand sideways or whatever we end up doing (outgrown where we are really), we'll have a case with a few in.

That will look great! Hope it gets people talking too when their in the shop! Who knows, it could kick off a nostalgia trip and put some dc01 business your way! If not then it will look pretty!

I'm eyeing up a very clean looking blue Ralph Fiennes one we have now.  :underchair:

We also have a couple of clean DC02's in bits in a box I hung onto. And we have some new cyclones for those too. And a couple of cable reels left.

I suppose I should keep one of everything (I have some new DC03 motors and clutches). If blokes like us don't do this now, there will be none left in the future when they have all gone.

I wanted to update this.

When we did this we were missing a red tilting soleplate (we used a grey one) and I wasn't entirely happy with the slightly imperfect stickers on top of the cyclone.

We have since had a couple of machines in for breaking. One had superb stickers on the cyclone, and the colour match was perfect, and one had a perfect red soleplate on.  :-*

Our DC01 had a blank red HEPA filter cover on. We since got in a batch of new [old] stock a super-rare, spanking new, red one with the lettering on. So that went on too. The one we took off went to someone on our waiting list.

Our DC01 was brought down from the loft, unwrapped, these bits added, wrapped back up and stowed away again.

When we move/expand sideways/open a second shop [which option is up in the air as yet] these De Stijl machines will be in a cabinet for visitors to look at.

Waking up this eight-year-old topic here.

We have no space for some of our old DC01s in the reception of our new premises.

The machine we rebuilt in this topic is now for sale.

You can find it on an eBay auction this evening, item number 304879171708.
