Opinions on building a pristine Dyson DC01 to store?
« on: December 31, 2013, 05:09:06 pm »
Whilst clearing out in the depths of our shop today, we came across a Ametek DC01 motor new in the box I forgot we had (for those who don't know, these are impossible to get now). Initially, we put it on our news section and social media in order it may find an enthusiast out there.

However, on further thought, it occurred to me that we still have some brand new bins for DC01's, a bunch of good duct assemblies to choose from, new wheel sets, maybe one genuine hose left and most other stuff in good condition or new. So we *just about* have enough new or excellent stuff to build an absolutely pristine DC01.

We normally sell recon DC01's at around £79 (and are withdrawing them from general sale in the new year due to scarcity of good motors and bin catches), but to build such a thing as this would swallow over £100 in parts alone. But it would be pretty unique as superb ones of these are rather thin on the ground now.

The businessman in me says don't build one and simply sell the parts. The Dyson enthusiast in me says build a mint one with the brand new motor, as it may be our last opportunity to do so.

But then what to do with it? If sold we would probably need £200 for it, so it will sit about waiting for a collector - and probably go to a good home. Part of me says build it, box it up and throw it in the attic for a few years, as this time in five years it will be a rare beast indeed. In the latter case, when we expand and/or relocate, it will end up in a glass case probably.

So I thought I would solicit a few opinions here. What say you? Would you build it? And if so, what would you do with it?

Go for it ;D
It is quite hard to find a mint DC01 never mind refurbished
The DC01 should be looked after by the new owner as it is an old reliable retired beast
If I had it, I would treasure it as I grew up with a DC01 (bought in 1997, broke in approx 2001
The Ametek motor new would be some wicked miracle! I want one :D
Some Ametek DC01's are louder than YDK DC01's because of the horrid bearings, this DC01 motor of yours is  awesome!

It is so rare to find one of these motors new. We had about six a few months ago from a pile of obsolete ex-Dyson stock we bought - which quickly sold. But one turned up today in an unexpected place among some new DC03 motors we have from that lot. Just boxed wrong by our part-timer at the time I guess - as we had three van fulls of stuff to put away in a few hours at that time and it was all hands on deck.

We also have some new stuff to build two or three *as new* DC04 green/lime machines.

We bid semi-blind on a big pile of very old but new stuff a few months back, and had to travel abroad to get it. We are now getting through the remnants of that lot. Hence why we have DC02 cable rewinds and nobody else does. Down to about 15 of those now from 150....

There was a lot of DC01 stuff in there, most of which has gone, but we still have a few bits. A hose and a brushroll and a bumper here and there.  ;)

If we build this machine, I will photo document it along the way.

In hindsight, we probably should have kept the new one in a box we got a few months ago.

Brand new DC01 cyclone with a pack of 8 filters

;D

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dyson-Cyclone-Top-Assy-for-DC01-Part-no-02281-01-Plus-8-Filters-/201015422412?pt=UK_Vacuum_Cleaners&hash=item2ecd73edcc

I think we have several of those already. But @ £10 I'll try that. I doubt I will win. Thanks, Parwaz.
