DC04 Clutch Conversion: Parts Required?
« on: April 18, 2014, 03:09:07 pm »
I recently did a clutch conversion on a DC07, and have been asked to quote for the same, but on a DC04. Looking at the parts prices on Machester Vacs, am I right in thinking that the DC04 additionally uses a different back hose and bottom hose for clutched and clutchless models? Are any other parts needed over and above the DC07 conversion parts?
If so, it's probably not worth the extra cost.
The DC14, by contrast, appears to just need the same parts changing as the DC07?
Edit: just noticed the sticky on this topic which confirms that the back hoses are different, so it's just the bottom hose I'm querying?

Yes the clutched and clutchless 04s use different hoses, front housings sole plates and brushrolls (I think)

Can't say I'd bother when you can pick up a tidy 04 for under £20 just needing a bit of a wash!

The bottom hose differs between clutched and non clutched usually, yes. However, on some machines that have the later all in one brush housing, they have the non clutch type bottom hose. If a brush housing with the rubber bumper is used (the more popular one) then the hose differs.

Back hoses and wands differ slightly on a clutched machine, but for the purposes of a clutch conversion, that doesn't matter.

Dc04 uses diffrent hoses on a clutched and non clutched, however the rear hose on a clutched is just the same as one without the clutch, only diffrence being that one has a rubber tip and the other plastic

As they have different ends, it makes them different.

The OPs query was about a clutch conversion, and nothing to do with back hoses.

Yes, the back hoses are very different, a non clutched hose would fall off a clutched wand, and a clutched hose wouldnt go over the wide end part of a non clutched wand.

So technically a non clutched hose would fit a clutched machine, but you would soon see it back with a complaint about the hose falling off. I had a refurb back that had a crappy pattern hose on that didnt have a clip (thought it would be ok, lesson learnt), swapped that out, and chopped the end off the pattern hose ready to fit a proper wand end when I get round to it one day etc

That reminds me of a espares video - Dyson dc04 refurbishment, he said you will never be able to get the same colour parts... really I can always find the same colour parts. He tries to put a unclutched handel Into a clutched hose, he said it will always be very tight with it  being new. I could hear the cracks of the plastic being stretched on the hose

He did ask about the rear hoses too and I thought I'd meniton that one has a rubbery type tip and the other is plastic (didn't bother going into detail but when I did a cluch conversion I got rid of the old clutch type hose and used the nonclutched type, was making a decent dyson out of a yellow clutched and a grwen unclutched miGHT have a pic but I threw it out not long ago because it was useless, we bought another for £15 and did a few swaps for parts, do t was t to confuse things so I wI'll explain on a new thread because this is unrelated and I don't want to get anything planned

Indeed, the folks at Connect eSpares are/were OK but not as clever as they thought they were/are. Only people that take them apart to repair/refurbish know the variants, versions and foibles. Qtex for example, sensibly send parts out to places like us and nearby Barlows to get back details they may need to advise on compatibility. If it doesn't fit on ones with a purple widget and a blue handle, they want to know that stuff. Even they still get compatibility stuff wrong sometimes; eSpares more so.

Will a clutched hose fit a silver/orange Constant Max? eSpares wont know. Can you still buy a DC04 wand cap that fits both variants? eSpares will say "No, and by the way, what two variants?" We will say "Yes; how many do you want?"  8) "Which DC07 head is a colour match for the 04 Marie Curie special edition?" We know stuff like that, and parts sellers (only) generally don't. That is one of our USPs; our USPs assist us to survive alongside multi-million pound parts sellers.

Not that I am denigrating parts sellers like eSpares. They sell a lot of parts, make a few quid, control a lot of the market, and likely get most of it right (although I will add we are usually cheaper). But the specific nuts and bolts of parts compatibility - as with old cars which is a similar market in terms of dynamics - is only known by people who have taken hundreds of them apart and rebuilt them again. Which is folks like us and the good people who one can find on this forum. As with old cars, collectors, engineers and enthusiasts are where the real product knowledge lies.
