DC14 safety valve
« on: April 22, 2014, 09:58:00 pm »
Hi guys
Can anyone shed any light what is happening here?
I picked up a repair - someone has previously fitted a motor themselves and now given this to me with suction problems.
I reassembled chassis as it had not been aligned correctly and tested.
Suction not great at head but pretty good on hose. However when I cover the hose the safety valve on top of cyclone opens and stays open even after releasing top of hose. The motor also over heats fairly quickly and thermal cut out comes in to play.
No blockages anywhere on vaccum.
Never underestimate the ingenuity of the dobber !

The airways must be restricted somewhere else and putting your hand over the hose is enough for the pressure release valve to kick in and stay open.

I know you said no blockages but the motor overhearting is another sign of this.

If you remove the pre-filter does it still do the same? The mesh in the yellow or blue filter casing may be clogged with dust.

Also pop the little plastic cover off the release valve, watch out for the long spring, take the sealing part out and make sure they are clean. If hair etc is caught in there it will cause it to stick.

Remove both filters and use until it dies. How long did it take? When I have this with a duff motor it's only about 2-3 minutes of use (use it, dont just leaving it standing wont generate enough load)

This is the usual one.

its overheating after a few mins. Im waiting on an order of filters tomorrow so try with brand new filter tomorrow - but looks like the motor is gubbed.
The release valve is better with a clean filter - but Ill know better with brand new.
The guy who fitted motor is adamant its a new motor - no doubt mtr299.

no doubt mtr299.

 :biglaugh:

Yes, we sent most of those back whence they came. They look (and even weigh) the same as a proper one, but they are not.

Can you be a bit more specific? The 07 motor is the same. 04 can be depending who makes it. Any numbers on the motor?

Model number on motor DC04/07. Not mtr299 or mtr 240.
Never seen it before.( bought from dyson doctor on ebay )
I put mtr 240 in and problem goes away.
