Hi there,

We have a problem with our DC14 and I thought I might try this forum before I head for the repair man. The machine will not suck in the upright position, also in that position the stuff in the cylinder does not spin round. I have checked all tubes for blockages, but have found nothing untoward - anyone have any suggestions, please? (everything works normally in push-pull operation)

Thanks for the suggestion - I have washed and returned the washable filter, but unfortunately no change. There appears to be more suction coming from the small vent above the washable filter unit than from the hose!
My wife has told me that she may have sucked up (the vacuum not her!) some wood splinters from around our inside log pile. Is it possible that some of these have got lodged somewhere not easily accessible - any idea where else I can check?

Have you taken the inspection tubes out and checked? Will be a u shaped one underneath that sorts the hose out, and if you remove the piece by the clutch on the side that should be clear as well. It does sound like there is a blockage somewhere.

The manual http://media.dyson.com/downloads/UK/floorcare/Manuals/dc14_gen_manua_uk.pdf shows where everything is. Check the wand well, and remove the hose completely to check it properly.

If you remove the Airway Inspection U Bend then turn the machine on does it still sound blocked? If not then your issue is with the hose and/or wand.

Defiantly sound like something is blocked if the valve in the top is opening.

Its just process of elimination.

Take the pre motor filter housing out and switch on. Motor good? Does your hand get sucked to the side of it? Yes/No

Put the filter and housing back take the cyclone off and turn on. Sound better? Good suction from the right hand (as you look at it) tube? Yes/No

Put the cyclone back on, then on the left hand side at the bottom remove the inspection tube. Turn on. Good suction from the now exposed hole? Yes/No

Refit the inspection tube, then remove the wand and remove the hose. Hidden behind the hose is a locking tab. Pull it back with your finger and the hose pulls out. Turn on. Good suction from where the hose connected? Yes/No

If suction drips when the cyclone us fitted then that's blocked, but in your case I don't think that's it.

Should leave the wand and hose as suspects. I've seen stuff get lodged in the kink in the wand. Good prod with a garden cane normally shifts it, or connect the hose to the other end of the wand and see if it sucks it out.

I've finally discovered the blockage - in the nozzle on the end of the wand - how embarrassing!! Anyway, many thanks for all your collective time and effort on my behalf.
