Hoover Vortex V2000

I picked up a few vacs last weekend, 2 from the car boot



This caught my eye as I've never seen one since they were new, and do remember neighbors having them, and it was only £4!



The Hoover Vortex, the machine that prompted Dyson to sue the arse off Hoover for patent infringement, so it was pulled off sale quite quickly, bodged about and renamed the hurricane, whirlwind and other names.



The first thing I noticed was the rubbish suction. Quick check of the filter revealed it was choked, and some research pointed to the fact that it's always bee na bit crap for dust retention



Gave it a quick vac off and it was much better

Gave it a teardown the other night after doing the DC04 first

Height adjuster off

Activator looks in good condition, so wont replace that



Belt wasnt so sexy though





One bearing wouldnt come off the shaft, and one end cap would come off the activator so they can stay there!

(Brushroll bearings are identical to DC Non clutched brushroll bearings)





Lifted the machine off the bottom chassis

The only bit of damage there is. Will glue this up later

Grabbed the one from the DC04 which was drying at the time



Popped it out of the way, confident that I could sort the horrible sound it makes!

Filter housing out. I binned the crap remains of the filter in here, will cut down a dyson post motor filter to repace it

Both were as dry as my screenwash tank is currently  , but the size looked familiar. Quick rootle through my Turbopower box of spares and 2 NOS 1980's motor bearings which fitted perfectly!



Will refurb this one and put it in the dyson box incase I need it for a brushroll, will replace both bearings whilst it's open like it is!



Vacced all the metal bits off





Currently in my drying booth ready to be put back together. Had to order a new filter too as it fell apart when I washed it. Very annoying as I had a NOS HEPA one that I binned as I thought 'When will I get a Vortex, POS that is, never see one etc......'

Seeing only Dyson machines day in, day out, I find it really interesting to see other stuff that we never see.

Also lots of folks Google stuff like this, so it brings in readers and hopefully new contributors. The topic is what, three hours old? I see it already has thirty odd hits.

Well sadly there was trouble in paradise! Getting the motor back together last week, I had it all in one piece and was centring the armature as I have done many times before...

tap tap tap tap CRACK 

Blew the top out of the housing. Was being very gentle too, was very annoyed!



Anyone got a spare one of the above I could purchase off them please? Dont need a whole amtek, but I glued mine together and it runs but isnt level and makes one hell of a noise. Not shelling out for a new motor for it!

Annoyed by this, and the cord rewind switch cover that kept breaking when I put it in I got the machine together so I didnt loose any parts













I wanted to like it but thanks to  Candys cost cutting b it's ruined! Hopei t works well when it has a motor in!

Even more annoyingly I'd ordered some parts for it in readiness for it being back together.  it mayas well fit them so they dont get lost!









Wrong colour but the chances of finding a blue one are pretty nil so I'm happy with it. For the price it would have been rude not to anyway!





Also got a new filter





Has a washable inner which is nice





Looks nice anyway!





I then did something about the  pre motor filter! I could have bought another original one, but it would be the same rubbish that was in there before so I raided the shed and...





I made it slightly oversize so when it squashes in it expands and fills the holder nicely!



Job done for now, I put it in the loft out of the way. Will get either a new back plate or a scrap amtek to get the part from and fire it up and show you all!

It'll be a better Hoover now its got a bit of Dyson in there.

Thought you'd like it! The original Hoover filter is bad by design, letting a substantial amount of dust through. At least I trust the Dyson filter to keep alot more at bay, due to the design! And when it gets too smeggy I can cut another one out, rather than shelling out another £5(!!!) for another bit of black foam!

Well the lovely Autovac came up trumps and sent me a lovely broken amtek motor! (The top bearing wasnt there, just the inner race... bet that made a bang when it went...)

Anyway, I swapped the broken piece off mine for the in tact piece from the broken Amtek, and made a start putting it all together











A non clutched, used dyson belt is a perfect fit!



And she works again!(rug had lovely trackmarks in, which the flash on my crappy camera killed...)



Picked up a fair bit too from 2 rugs and the stairs



It did run VERY hot though, although I imagine it did that when new. Filter looked spotless still when checked





And finally, the Vortex is finished! It does work very well, although I can see why most have died by now, bad filtration and hot running picked them off one by one! I do have a video, I'll upload it later!

Thread update!

Months and months ago (probably just after crimbo), I saw and bought a new genuine old stock motor for the Vortex. I also added a new brushroll to a q know who order at some point, and the parts have been gathering dust ever since

So when I got home from work I popped up into the loft and got out the Vortex!



and got it apart to fit the motor



New cables came with the motor, as the terminals were different on both



Fits in nicely with the rubbers that came in the box





That fitted, I put the motor cover back on and quickly fired her up, MUCH better!

Brushroll next



I think it was needed, although the old one still groomed nicely tbh



I fitted the old end caps onto the new brushroll, as the old ones have edge cleaning brushes on





and had a test run. sniff sniff, mmm, whats that burning?





 , there's a difference between the end caps after all. New end caps quickly fitted and...

It doesnt come out well in the video but the motor is quieter, smoother, doesnt make odd noises on wind down, the suctions a tad improved and it doesnt run anywhere near as hot!

Just a cord rewind button and a blue dusting brush to find now and she will be complete!
