Author Topic: DC24 Is there power to the head? (Read 7988 times)

Had some problems with the brushbar head recently. Over a period of time the brush bar had been stopping for a few seconds from time to time. This got worse with time, eventually it would only run when the handle was low down or in certain positions. Then it stopped working completely. I thought maybe the brushes in the motor were wearing, but they seemed ok when I stripped it. Eventually decided that the motor had given up. Bought a new one and fitted it, but still nothing happening. (Have checked the thermal cutout). The main motor's working fine, and having fitted a new lower duct hose (the old one had been damaged and had holes in) there's plenty of 'suck'.

Any ideas on how to check if power is reaching the head? I've put a multimeter across the connections where the head meets the body of the hoover; there seems to be a voltage of around 70v ac which comes and goes when I switch the brushbar switch on the handle.

I've seen posts here that suggest wiring inside the yoke can cause intermittent problems.

Any suggestions for expoloring the problem further?

You need to strip off the yoke assembly and look at the wires going through it, it is most likely that. Possibly the microswitch, but more likely the wiring in the yoke.

I've now had time to strip this down and have a look. There is indeed a break in the wiring in the yoke. It's about halfway around the curved part, and within the transparent plastic binding that holds both wires. Is this wiring loom available to buy? If not, what's the best way of going about repairing it?

Do you mean the bit of loom that is attached to the clear brush housing?

There's a pair of wires that runs from the centre of the ball axis joint, under a black circular plate, and then down the yoke tube, ending at the connector for the head power. One is red, the other white. The wires curve around under the black circular plate and it's there that the white wire is broken. It looks burnt, but there's no apparent physical stress, so I imagine it was a hot spot that burned through.

This is the bit - the two wires are protected by a plastic enclosure. The red wire is ok, but the white one has a break about halfway around the curve. One end of the wire has a spade termination, the other fits into a white connection block.

That loom comes as part of the yoke assembly, and they are not especially cheap: DC24 Yoke Assembly & Wiring Loom.

Mmmm, that is a bit heavy. My inclination would be to prepare a new white wire and fit it. The spade end is easy to sort; any idea how straightforward the connector end is? Is it a standard size/fitting?
