Hello everyone!
« on: August 05, 2014, 09:50:26 pm »
Hello everyone,

I've been having a play about with Dyson's for a few months now.  It all began when my mum gave me her DC04 Animal to see if I could repair it for myself.  The handle was snapped off the top of the wand, and the brush bar no longer rotated.  A second hand wand and new clutch belts and I had myself a Dyson!  Very easy, and I enjoyed taking it to bits so much that I offered to service my dads DC03.

To cut a long story short, I now have (in various states of disrepair!) a DC24 Animal, two DC14 animals, two DC04's, and a DC16.  A bit worrying that I have somehow ended up having 'Dyson vacuum cleaners' as a hobby!!!   :grinn:  Suppose I better build myself a shed to use as a workshop as my house is getting a bit cluttered!  Still, at least my carpets are clean!

Look forward to learning from these boards, and with time, perhaps being able to offer something back...

Nice to meet you all!   :tiphat:

Welcome to the site, Dude!  :tiphat:

We started the same way. I had a bunch of Dysons in bits about me for no particular reason other than I liked them, and having worked in a vac shop repairing stuff in the 80's as a teenager, and having a decent grasp of electrics, I felt vaguely familiar. So we had a play, built some, sold a few, fixed a few for others, dabbled on eBay, bought some more, took those to bits, sold a few spares, etc......

Hi MVacs,

Thanks for the welcome!  I have a pretty good understanding of electrics too, although I am not familiar with the motors themselves.  Am I right in thinking that these are generally thought of as throw away items?  Do people strip them down and repair / rebuild them or does it make more sense to just replace a motor when its dead?
I haven't sold any (yet), just buying them and fixing them... Not sure why really!  Suppose I will have to sell them eventually to make room for fixing more! ha!

Most people do, yes.

*They're*    Sorry, couldn't resist!     I'll never do that again, I promise!   :grinn:

Trouble is, once I've made them all nice and shiney and put new belts etc in, I don't want to sell them!  No beer for me then!

I've already found a few of your posts helpful, so thank you beko1987, I appreciate it!  Nice to 'meet' you!

Sorry, posts made at work get to skip proof reading, no time! You sound like you will know of PistonHeads with grammar-nazi-ism like that!

You rotate them! Refurb one and keep it for a while. Obtain another one, refurb that. Clean off the used one with another vac to get rid of all visible dust and sell one. Use one for a few weeks until another one crops up, rinse and repeat!

Nice to meet you too!

I usually resist the temptation to correct grammar; even though I notice it.  :underchair:

He he, one gets torn apart mercilessly on there if bad spelling/grammar are noticed

It's not too hard https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,1310.0.html

Got one to do thinking about it, it's full of hair which makes it roar, and span fine until I may have dropped it on the patio, and not doesnt, needs stripping, freeing, cleaning and hopefully will be another good motor!
