DC04 Rumbling sound?
« on: August 06, 2014, 09:56:20 am »
Ok, so perhaps not a rumbling sound!  I'm not too sure how to describe the sound, nor am I exactly sure where it is coming from but it sounds more like brush bar than motor.  This is a non clutch model so I can't disengage the brush bar to see if the sound stops.  I'm thinking perhaps some bearings in the brush could be shot and making this noise?  Has fantastic suction, just a shame about the louder than normal noise! Everything is fitted / seated correctly.

Oh, and the brush bar is a brand new one off ebay!?

Any ideas?  Am I right in thinking its the brush bar or could this be the motor?

Could be a bent brushbar; some on eBay are not very good and are bent from new. Non clutched machines are noisy when the brush bar is bent.

Disconnect the belt and that will tell you if it is the brushbar or not.

Belt disconnected, sounds perfect.  Thank you for your suggestion, I don't know why I didn't think of doing that!  Now to try to find a brus bar that's not bent...

Have you had a cursurey (sp) look at the brushroll bearings? Whilst the brushroll does do a bannana sometimes I;ve had dry bearings make odd sounds.

If you pull one of the end caps off, then withdraw the centre spindle attached to the other end cap, you'll see a bearing either side. With the spindle, insert the very tip of it int oa bearing (so the end wont poke out the the other side too much) and lever the bearing out. Does it feel dry/rumbly?

If the bearing has a black palstic cap on both sides then pop these off using a tiny flatblade screwdriver/tip of a fine knife from the inner (smaller diameter) edge, clean the air out and pop some fresh grease (or oil) in. If their all metal then you can't do much I'm afraid.

May be cheaper than a new brushroll, or at least help you troubleshoot! If the oil/grease helps matters then either roll with them until it happens again or just change the bearings. Their pretty cheap, im sure someone could order you 2 in (ebay can be pants for things like bearings!)

Cheers beko, just had a look at the bearings now.  They're all metal so can't get into them - where do you order yours from?  Or should I just go ahead and order a new brush as I can't check these ones?  Where do you order your brushes from?  I don't want to end up ordering another noisy one!

Bearings come with the brushroll, and I'd get them from either eBay or mvacs. Ask mvacs about a nice tidy brushroll and belt, I'm sure they will read this!

Try the bearings from the new brushroll in the old brushroll.

Chances are bearings in the new one are OK, it will be bent. We stuffed loads of bent brushrolls back at two suppliers in recent months, and then changed supplier. There are some bad batches out there. And bad batches end up on eBay usually.

I'm unable to try the bearings from the new brushroll in the old one as I threw it out!  :'(

Are you able to supply me with a new one that isn't going to make this noise please MVacs, and at what price?  PM me if you prefer?
