Bin find DC01 De Stijl
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:53:31 pm »
About a month ago, my stepbrother called me on his way to work saying he's found a hoover at the side of the road and chucked it in the van for me. Great I said, what is it? An early Dyson like mym used to have (my stepmum had a year old DC01 Grey when my dad met her).Ah cool, I said. Look ok? It's red and purple...Wow keep it safe, I said, and he said he would, and we ended the call. 20 minutes later he called me back saying listen, does it sound ok? He fired it up over the phone for me which I couldnt hear very well. He said it wasnt sparking, sounded ok but there was a rattle from the brushroll. Cool, thanks very much! He took it home for me that night

We went up on Monday, and I picked it up after a brief look, and got it out at my grans earlier inbetween the mahoosive rain showers Peterborough are having at the moment

I've always wanted a De Stijl, but they always go for over what I would pay. A free one, yes please!

The wand sticker is slightly faded, but apart from that the wand is pristine. Was full of sweet wrappers and fag ends though

No cyclone stickers, but looking at the plastic they've been missing for a good while as there's no sign at all

The soleplate is scratched to heck but unbroken! In quite good nick actually, I might get some wet/dry or wire wool and see if I can smooth out the damage. Suction port was half blocked though, as they all are

Someone told me all De Stijls were made on this date, and then I looked and they were correct!

Signs of a previous life

One lovely unbroken filter flap!

Yummy cyclone

Grandad found me a screwdriver and I changed the belt (of course I put spares in the car before we left...)

I took the filters out before firing it up

I cleaned it out a bit, didnt put new filters in as it would have ruined them in seconds, and popped into my grans front room...

Not a valid youtube URL
They only have a Vax Mach 6 cylinder, and whilst I sorely wished I had found a Hoover Turbopower 1 rather than a dc01 as it would have bought their pile up a treat, the DC01 did well! In dire need of a stripdown and clean, but was better than my dc03 suction wise from the off! Blew out a cloud of dust when I turned it on every time though.

Packed it in the car and we came home. It's sat in the hall now, I have machines in bits that I should get together first before starting

And for now, my first De Stijl! Am in need of a nice full set of De Stijl tools for it though , and could possibly be tempted with a new brushroll if this one feels a bit low in use on my rug (which I know how it comes up so can judge the condition better than a carpet I havent vacuumed since I was 7 with a Vax 121...)

PS  that amount of dust is how much I can get from vacuuming my entire downstairs with a DC14!

I stripped her down on saturday morning

Wand release apart

PAT stickers off

Top cable hook off

Hose off

Filter flap removed very carefully

and placed it very carefully out of the way since it's made of purest unobtanium!

Moved back to the top next

[/img]

Removed the chocolate blocks

Empty

Sadly this is torn, which is a shame as one can't get them anymore  :(

Cyclone seal off

The other one is glued in so I left it alone

Found another sweet wrapper that had worked its way into the filter cage

Soleplate was off next

and split

Brushroll was removed and split

The bearings are in superb condition which is nice

Bumper off

it was utterly filthy!

Housing off

Floaty bit off

Uncovered the motor

Housing seals off

Blockage flaps out

Wheels off

Bottom half wiring

Back when Dyson made smaller electrical components!

More seals off

I think its had a hard life

The rare heart is out

Onto the cyclone

It got messy

Seals off

I then washed everything, and it dried nicely over night. Gave it all a nice first polish earlier, and popped it back together

Seals are nice and clean now

Bin shone up well too

Popped the release valves back in

and it was done

Moved on

Fed the wire in and popped the seals on

and fitted the bottom half of the assembly

I blew the motor out earlier with an airbed pump, and cleaned it off a bit so it doesnt look so bad

and closed it off

Put the release wheel back together

brushroll housing and wheels on next

Brushroll is in good condition, and is quite stiff

One end is a bit worn though, not quite sure how, the old belt was very very worn so it must have allowed it to vibrate. Sounds fine with a new belt though

Bumper cleaned up nicely

One bit of damage I noticed around here was this slight meltage from the motor spindle. It is damn tight, I can barely get the belt over it! Must have seen some long running in the past

Baseplate went back on and the bottom end was done

Top end was wired up

Getting there!

Cleaned the hose end up

and finally got the new filters out!

Had to slightly cut this one to size

The post motor filter fitted well however

I gave it a quick test fire just to check it was together fine, and the suction seems very very good, and the motor runs alot smoother now. I then noticed the plug

Much better!

She needs a final polish, and for some tools to arrive, but it looks alot better than it did!

Nearly there! Will have a little play tomorrow and see if its any better!

I've had a pretty much complete DC01 De Stijl in the shed since last summer, with the intention of swapping the cyclone tops round with mine, as this one has nice stickers. Done sod all with it until saturday, when someone asked if I could refurb it and sell it to them. Couldnt refuse!

I stripped and washed the shed de stijl, then took the cyclone top off mine

Fitted that, then got the rotaty out with some power finish polish. Put a coat of wax on it after that, it looks lovely now!

It's buttery smooth now! Must get a pic with all the tools and instruction manual that someone swapped me with some old style filters for!

:o  Yes it was. You been monitoring my emails?  Do you work for GCHQ  :underchair:

Friend of ours who lives in Black heath picked them up for me and brought them to the caravan rally we were all on, would have vacuumed everyone's van to test them but we had no electric.

I live in Leicestershire.
