DC 59 charging voltage requirements
« on: August 19, 2014, 03:17:31 pm »
Hi everyone,
I'm considering breaking the piggy bank to buy the DC59 if it's possible to use it in countries with widely different voltage, say from 110 to 220, not to mention Hz. Because it is a rechargeable unit, does this permit a greater latitude or am I restricted to a single country's voltage? Specifically, I'm thinking of buying in the U.S. for use in the Philippines.

Thanks for your reply. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity_by_country its 220V at 60Hz in the Phils, and 120V at 60Hz in the US where I plan to purchase the DC59, so I needed to know it it can run (or rather charge) on dual voltage. This probably has an extremely obvious answer.

Wouldn't you just need to buy the applicable charger for the countries voltage requirements?
I would even think you could pick up a generic one as long as it has the right voltage input and output.

What Dan said.

Agreed, because the 120 volt charger can blow its step down transformer, and possibly the battery pack too.

I found this review/reply on Amazon dealing specifically with the DC59 and thought it might prove helpful should you get another query about international voltage:

Actually,110-240v. All Dyson cordless cleaners OK from 110v to 240v.

Now we know. FYI you can access the full reviews at the website.

What about differing power plugs?

To be clear this is referring the the unit, not the charger correct?
I would be very surprised if you could plug the charger from USA (120v) into a PowerPoint in Australia (240v) without it blowing the charger.

It could be they have multi rated input chargers like some phones and laptops do (I don't have a charger handy to look at the ratings on), but one would still need to use an adaptor to overcome the plug differential if there is one.

It would appear the Philippines have two types of plug.

From the Philippines:

US one on the right.

But the Philippines is 220v where the US is 120v. But if a multi rated input like most chargers nowadays, and the plug type is the same (or an adaptor is available), it will probably be OK. The main unit will be the same anywhere, only the charger plug/range will differ.

One would need to look at the rating plate on the charger. If it specifies a 110-250v, 50-65 hz range of input, it will be OK anywhere subject to a suitable adaptor. If it doesn't, plugging a 120v charger in a 220v supply will make the charger go pop.

I didn't know they had multi input.
Just checked my DC58 Animal charger and it says: input 100-240v~50-60Hz

Thanks Dan. The multi-input of the charger was at the core of my query and you answered it. Picking up an adapter for the wall socket is a no-brainer.
