Hello from Scotland!
« on: July 25, 2014, 12:39:16 am »
Hello, just a brief intro.

Long time lurker of these forums, I have  DC07 Animal that has just turned 13.

Just interested in keeping it going as long as possible and keeping it working it's best!

It's dealt with a lot over the years, 8 years of cat hair, 8 yrs of hubs psoriasis, 3 years of greyhound hair and muck and we seem to have always lived in the dustiest places!

I bought the workshop manual a year ago now, but am just now getting stuck in. Have changed the post motor filter (the last was completely full partly melted) I would have done it years ago if I'd known.

I think I will start replacing parts bit by bit. Everything is still currently original.

Hi, Welcome!

At that age I imagine the belts will be well past it, you can either buy a new or refurbished clutch, or a set of belts and follow my tutorial to get them changed! The brushroll will probably be ok. The brushroll bearings, that sit under the black end caps (just twist them off the axle) will be re-greasable if they ahve the black plastic cover either side, that will quieten that part down!

Wash the cyclone out and clean all the rubber seals you can see (they pop off to do it properly) and you will (hopefully) be amazed!

I'd be surprisedi f you needed to replace many parts to be honest! You washed the washable filter and the plastic housing it sits in yet?

As Beko says, the brushbar should be ok but get a 2 pence piece and undo the 3 plastic screws on the sole plate and have a look at the brushbar. If it's clogged with hair/bits of carpet, just take a Stanley knife to it. Don't cut the belt! Also make sure the clear plastic hose on the underside of the machine is not split.

Do you think it's a given that they will need replacing? At the moment the brush bar rotates fine and the clutch is working fine. I suppose so at that age, it will probably be best to replace them before they snap.  I think I will invest in a refurbished clutch with new belts.

The brush bar seems absolutely fine, I have long hair and sew for a living, I give the brush bar a hair/cotton thread haircut after each use, it builds up so quickly (I use my husbands moustache scissors, perfect for the job but shhhhhhh don't tell him!).

What is best to use to grease the axles? I don't have any grease, but I do have triflow oil that I use for servicing sewing machines.

Yes I've washed that over and over, I have two that I rotate and they are washed at least monthly. I may need to replace the original as the sponge has shrunk slightly and doesn't fit snugly in the housing anymore.

The only other part I think I may have to replace at some point is the top part if the cyclone, the bit with the handle and bin release and opening switches as there are some cracks on the handle, but not to the important parts. From reading on here it seems inevitable as the lavender parts are more fragile. I'm going to make repairs for now with some sugru. I see you can buy a replacement in the shop, but only in silver, which will be a shame, but better than buying a whole new vacuum cleaner!

Thank you :)

Do you have a lavender cyclone top for a DC07 animal? The handle part is cracking on mine.

Good to hear you keep the brushroll in good order! If the belts seem fine then you may as well leave it for a few more years, if the brushroll starts skipping on the carpet though then you know they are ready!

The lavendar handles seem more fragile than the rest, I've had a few broken ones before. Does it have a second bit of plastic underneath as a strengthener or just the single layer handle?

Sewing machine oil should do it, just a light coating over the moving parts should see it good!

Top tip - make sure you take the clear cyclone bin off before removing the handle and release rod assembly... (Don't ask how I found that out...)

Hello Scotland,
Just read this thread -  DC07's are the best
& had to add to Beko's comment about removing the bin first - I have a pea stick with a sticker on that says "DC07 Bin Release Pole" for the very same reason.
