EU crack down on power.
« on: August 30, 2014, 02:47:52 pm »
How does everyone feel on the latest green decision from the EU regarding motor wattage?  :underchair:

I have been semi-invited on to BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning to discuss it. But they haven't got back to me to confirm or not yet.

I think they wanted to go down the usual BBC melting ice caps, killing polar bears route and wanted a yes man to big it up. My view that we didn't need yet more diktats from the EU and James Dyson was challenging it in European court kinda made the researcher do this.  :snivel:

Last I heard they wanted to run it by a news editor. Crickets and snoring since then.  :chuckle:

I wonder when they will reduce the power of hair dryers, washing machines and fan heaters.

Well, they never called me back. So I guess breakfast on the BBC tomorrow will be why everyone should drive a Toyota Prius, melting ice caps, Ed Milliband and a smattering of anti-Russian propaganda.  :biglaugh:

I guess next time I should make nice noises on melting ice caps in advance, and just say what I think once live on air.

On vac motors though, isn't it a 1600w limit? Arent most machines at or below that anyway now?

I am glad the EU are cutting down power on vacuum cleaners! :)

Lazy stupid barns like Vax are using 2200W motors cos they have crap machines, so shove a very powerful motor in, but then this attracts customers because they think it is better than a 1100 watt machine.
DC24 cleans as good as a full size machine and it is only 650W, and Dyson never exceeded 1400W

Should it be the job of unelected bankers in Belgium to dictate how big the motors on our vacuum cleaners can be? Or is our country old enough to make its own decisions?

I can see the point of it but I am just getting so fed up of being dictated to.  Why pick on the vac?  What about all the energy wasted by leaving the lights on in shops and offices, most street light are way to bright.

Reduce the main motor size, and you have to add a brushbar motor. So now two motors.

And we know how good those brushbar motors can be.............

Its hairdryers now:

Quote
High-powered hairdryers are on a list of household electrical items the EU is considering banning in an attempt to curb energy consumption.

A study, commissioned by the European Commission, has identified up to 30 appliances including toasters and kettles which could be restricted.

The study forms part of the EU's energy efficiency directive aimed at helping to tackle climate change.

It follows a ban on powerful vacuum cleaners which begins on Monday.

From 1 September, companies in the EU will be banned from making or importing vacuum cleaners above 1600 watts.

Retailers said they had seen sales rise ahead of the deadline. Tesco said sales of vacuum cleaners had jumped 44% in the past fortnight, while Co-op Electrical has seen a 38% rise.

The EU has now turned its sights to smaller electrical appliances which are not yet covered by existing legislation.

Lawn mowers are on the list as well.  And yet you can still buy a car with a 3.5 or larger engine to drop the kids off at school and go shopping in.  Its a mad mad world.

And I hope you always will be able to.

Which may explain why I only sold 2 Dysons last Sunday! Anyone else had a big drop in sales?

I'm with Parwaz7862 for this 1st limit, in that it should reduce lazy, rubbish designs.
However, reduction to 600w max is just silly.
On the two motor subject - I understood it to mean the overall consumption, so adding a brushroll motor wont help.
