We went to Newquay in September, and I was browsing the usual sites from our location + 10 miles, and found a Turbopower on preloved. Quick grovel later and we head out on Sunday afternoon to Redruth
£10 later, and I was the proud* owner of a battered U2332!
Job no 1 when we got back to the caravan, tr it out! Saw a fleet of Henrys being used, so I doubt they've ever had an upright touch them!
Rare intact wheels!
Damage on the leading edge of the hood
Royal warrant is missing

Fun over, I split it in half, and it was packed in the car to be hoiked 270 miles from it's previous home
And home (a month later as I had other machines to get done and sold!)
Started with the top half first
The bag was empty-ish when I bought it, was quite full of sand after the caravan
The bag door hinges from the bottom
but can be a PITA, and one holder was already a bit broken, so I unscrewed the assembly
Glued this back on
Some foul smelling tissue was fitted to the air freshener!
Undid the bag door mechanism
The hinge flaps push out of the housing
Bag fill tube can come off now, with it's non original screws...
The bag full light suction pipe slides over a hole on the bag fill tube
Blocked solid
Onto the top half, there's a screw buried in here
There's a tiny plastic pin that prises out now
The switch pops out
and the handle wiring can be removed
Handle end cap comes off
Unscrew the palstic cover at the top of the bag housing next. Mine was only held in with 2 screws so was easy...
the block holder was broken
Undo the mains cable and the top handle can be pulled away as well
Checked the holder still fitted properly
Bag full light out now
The bag full mechanism pulls out now
and splits down some more
there's 2 tabs under here
and all the wiring can be removed
Since the bottom cord hook is already broken I removed the remains, I have a different colour one that I will fit, but it's a horrible job!
SWMBO found this a few weeks ago, and I knew it went with this, but not where. Found it...
Popped off the blank that hides the hole for the Autoflex reqind system found on the U2334 and various Total Systems (like my U2602)
Top half done, onto the bottom!
Base plate off
And the activator, belt and belt guide can be removed
Stripped the activator down
End caps were full of rubbish
Bearing out on one side
However, on the other side the outer case of the bearing had wedged into the casing, so when I persuaded it out with a hammer, it broke completely!
Dug out the plastic cap and felt washer
There's a screw in each of the channels
and the height adjuster knob pops off
And the hood lifts off.
Apart from on mine, both fixings are broken as they usually do, so mine just fell off...
Will fix that later. Bumper off
Long dead bulb out
Snip the cable tie off to make the bellows easier to release
Motor clamp off, and the motor lifts out.
Found a broken bit of plastic under the motor
and another bit missing which I found under the vibration damping foam!
The 2 metal hoops hold the top part onto the bottom, I split it this way. The clamp on this side also holds the release pedal in place
Foam motor damper out, and the hidden plastic rescued
Onto the wheels now
The caps pop out via the 3 tabs on the rear
Remove the circlip and remove all the bits. These wheels are replacement ones, given that their black rather than Deep Wedgewood Green
One cap was broken
Getting there now, heifght adjuster now!
Spring comes out
Edges first
Wheels lift up and out now
The slider pops apart and falls out too
Onto the motor now!
End rubbers pop off, and the clamp that holds it down
Bellows pop off
Pop the metal clips off and the fancase pulls off
Wires removed
There's a slot in the end of the belt pulley
anti-clockwise whilst holding the fan and
Metal and plastic shims sit under the fan
4 screws on the motor housing, slot head as it's an early motor
Carbons are close to the end, few years of light use left yet though

Lets finish this! (sorry, awful week at work!!)
Carbon brush holders are removed
The bearing holder pops out with some persuasion
I leave the metal strip that packs the housing out for the bearing in, its a pain to remove and not destroy!
The coil lifts off on these early motors, on later ones there is a spade connector to the top of the carbon holder...
and the armature taps out of the housing
Never seen one this bad before!

These sit in the top housing over the armature bearing
And stripped!
All was washed and scrubbed, and the plastics given an initial ciffing.
Motor went back together first
Armature slides into the top housing
The armature bearing was lovely and smooth so I left it
Carbon holders back in
**At this stage, check the carbon brushes slide freely. I'll elaborate later. Don't fit the carbons yet though...**
I grabbed the Turbopower box and got a nice NOS bearing
and fitted it to the fancasing
clip back on
Coil sits on now, metal tabs line up with their mouldings
Popped the armature back out of the housing and checked for clearance (the top fan does move about if your not careful)
All spinning nicely, I put it all together
Wires back in
Fan next
Then, very gently because their
fragile, lift the tabs up and fit the carbon brushes. Holding the sping down with a screwdriver and lowering the tabs stops the springs getting caught
Then the top fancase on

Bellows back onto the motor next
New cable tie on the bellows, and the motor rubbers and the motor is done.
Activator next, and I got my spares out, as the one on this one was quite worn
However, the ones I had weren't too much longer, and had softer bristles, so I kept the original one
and changed the bearings, end felts and end caps, and found an end assembly
new belt too
Lovely! Doesnt freespin like they do when worn, hopefully once its all bedded in it will be fine
Into the operating theatre now!
tacked on to get the right position, then lots of re-inforcement around it (I use Q-Bond)
Then, onto re-assembly
Sponge back in
Motor dropped into the housing
Rear wheels on
Centre wheels on
bumper fitted
Activator and belt fitted
Motor clamp on
Wiring fed through (goes over the lower cord hook housing though)
Got my bulbs out
Spine on, grease applied liberally to all the pivot points!
Sits more upright now I glued the spline back on!
top all wired up
cable holder glued back together
Wiring cover refitted with all correct thread and width screws
unblocked bag full valve
and the bag fill tube is fitted, again with correct, slightly thicker screws
Handle back together
I then fitted the bag door housing, then the black clips, then finally the bag door
Excited, I plugged her in, flicked the switch and...nothing! Tore it apart again and checked all the wiring against the diagrams in the 1987 service manual, still nothing. I put it together again and put it in the corner of the room whilst I refurbished a DC14 for a customer.
Earlier, I got it out and had the motor back out. Turns out I;d bent one of the carbon holders slightly, meaning it wouldnt touch the armature. (hence me adding the 'check your bushes above) Quick bend back, and she purred into life!
Whazzed it all together again, and got a bag out of the shed
Bottom cord hook doesnt spring like it should, but it holds the cable which is good enough for me!

Bogged down a bit on the rug, but kept flicking bits to the surface and getting them on the next pass! Will run it round properly tomorrow to get the bearings moving nicely and check it doesnt overheat!
Here it is sitting to it's 1995 grandson, which is next in the refurb pile (possibly), and the DC14 thats hopefully being collected tomorrow...

I did this a while ago, but remembered earlier that I haven't bought closure to this thread (not that anyone's probably interested!)
The plastic looked a bit sorry for itself
So I got the polishing kit out

None of the damage comes out but the depth and clarity of the reflection is improved
This was followed by a layer of glaze
And then a layer of wax
Don't have an unstruction book for it, and couldnt be bothered to get a toolset out of the loft, so found a promo book from when the Turbopower range first came out
cheapy ebay bolbs work well enough too
Finally, I bought an air freshener or two
Smells lovely!
Been dailying it quite alot since finishing it, does work REALLY well, the bags nearly a quarter full! Just need an instruction manual now, and it's own box of tools to complete the set!

Hello, I'm new here but found your article very interesting.
I have exactly the same Hoover, it has been in weekly service since bought in 1986 as a wedding present. All original but looking a bit battered obviously! Last week it went 'single speed' for some reason, it doesn't matter whether the switch is on '1' or '2', it doesn't change the motor speed.
I have had the top off and there are only live and neutral wires connected to the motor, so I assume the switch in the handle must be faulty? Any ideas? If it is an easy fix I'll have a go, otherwise it might be time to retire the old girl!
I'll post if I end up buying a new vac - you are welcome to any bits for spares if interested.

Hi.
Excellent to hear that one is still in daily service! I wouldn't expect anything less though from an old Hoover!
The switch will be at fault, but I'm not 100% sure. I've asked the question to a few people who might know, will report back with what they say! I think you can check by re-wiring the switch to 'the other way round' so the second speed works only, to check that the switch is at fault. Don't move wires until someone's confirmed the correct method to me though!
Has it switched to low or hi speed? You are correct, the switch does the work, the motor just takes the speed its told to!

I have a possible answer already from some elder collectors (I wasn't born until 1987!)
Within the handle wiring (there's a picture of it at the top of this thread) there is a Diode, which controls the voltage change from low to hi. Apparently this can go causing only one speed. Short of a multimeter I'm not sure how to test this, you could wire the mains cable straight to the motor to check it runs at full speed, but obviously would need to feel confident doing this.
I *think* I have a TP1 Handle with the wiring loom fitted, I could have a look and if so would be happy to post it to you, you would have to fit it though as per the pictures above!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate your help. I had a look this evening at the switch, I don't have a multimeter, just a basic mains tester but I think the switch is delivering full power both on setting 1 and setting 2, so as I hardly ever need to use low speed I can live with it. But thanks for the kind offer of the replacement handle.
It's always good to have an excuse to strip the machine down and clean it up and oil the activator bearings anyway, it is running almost like new again! For some reason this old Hoover with its 410 watt motor seems a lot more powerful than the 1600 watt Panasonic which I inherited from my mother, that thing has been consigned to the garage for car cleaning duty!

From what I've been told the diode has gone. It halves the voltage when speed 1 is selected, making the two speeds.
If you can live with only the higher speed, then it won't harm it. You could find a replacement diode and solder it in, but I've never stripped the sheathing off to have a look so have no idea what kind it is!
They work better than 1600w screamers because they are well designed. Dirty fan cleaners always groom and work on carpets better than clean fan ones Plus, it will Beat, as it Sweeps as it Cleans, its one of the last to have that!

Sorry to pick your brains again but if I do replace the Hoover, what's best to go for? (If cost was no option). I think I understand about dirty fans and clean fans, dirty fans suck the muck through the fan blades and blow it into the bag, while clean ones have the filters, bags etc before the fan, thus reducing suction, is that right?
So are Dysons really the best? I've always thought them a bit heavy and overpriced (apologies if you are a Dyson fan!) but people who have Dysons seem pretty happy with them. After nearly 30 years with the Hoover things have moved on a bit and there is a lot of choice out there.

Wow, thanks for the offer, yes please! I'll Pm you my address in a sec.
I'm not a dyson fan, especially not the latest ones, I prefer the older vacuums. If you want bagless, then a nice refurbished dc07/14 would be a good buy, for bagged try a Miele S7, or a Sebo X4. Panasonic might still do a good vacuum, John Lewis do their John numatic vacuum with a turbobrush.
Avoid modern Hoovers I'm afraid to say, and Vax. I've done a thread or two about them, and have had a few and their the most badly designed pieces of tosh about. No design thinking, no care for longevity etc.
Or you could 'upgrade' to a turbo power 2 or early bagged Pure power (avoid the bagless and current ones!)

Dave very kindly sent me an instruction manual last week, thanks very much!
One thing I noticed straight away was how small it is! I remembered I already had a U2332 manual that I got off ebay some time ago (and not filed correctly, hence forgetting about it...), and like all the other Hoover manuals I've got and seen it's A5.
This one is half that again!
Same reference number showing though

Hi i have a hoover identical but the handle release will only lock upright when you push the pedal up with your foot and i cant get it into the flat low furniture position. I wonder if it is to do with the repacement wheels that are not genuine nor of the original style. Also the bag release catch is stiff to push down too.

Mmm, could be a few things:
Do you have the spring underneath the release pedal which pushes it back up to lock it in position?
Is your trunnion broken? (the bit where the white latch peice slots onto)
Is the white latching peice broken?
Is the pedal pivot point gummed up with dirt? Does it work any better after a cleanout and a drop of grease on the moving parts?
I doubt the wheels would cause the issue, unless different axles were used, you'll have to see if it fouls anywhere.
RE bag door latch, again, take it apart, clean it up and put it back together. Nip the screw up fully, then back off half a turn and see what its like!
