Dyson takes EU to court over vacuum standards

Dyson has lodged a legal challenge against new European Union energy efficiency standards, claiming the process discriminates against the British company's vacuum cleaners.

Sir James Dyson, the entrepreneur who founded the company, said the new standards would "mislead people by overstating the energy efficiency of old-fashioned technology" at the expense of Dyson's innovative products.

The EU is due to bring in a new letter-based labelling system ranking vacuum cleaners on energy efficiency and performance next year, similar to the A-G ratings on fridges and washing machines.

However, Dyson claims the laboratory tests that are used to apply these labels are unfair, and poorly represent the company's bagless vacuum cleaners.

The company says the tests ignore how well a vacuum cleaner works over time, with bagged designs relying on filters to trap dust and dirt meaning they lose performance - something that is not tested in the EU's laboratory conditions.

Dyson also says the EU has also not taken into account the environmental impact of throwing away and repurchasing vacuum bags.

It has launched a judicial review with the European Court to challenge the new system, in which it says bumps up the ratings of rival vacuum cleaners.

“The energy label could have guided people towards high performing, energy efficient vacuum cleaners. Instead it will mislead people by overstating the energy efficiency of old fashioned technology which loses performance in the home," Sir James said.

"And it overlooks the impact, on both the pocket and the planet, of costly resource-sapping consumables.”
