Dyson DC25 Brushroll - Intermittant deadness
« on: January 07, 2015, 09:24:19 pm »
Seems to be the season for DC25 work. Had a lady message me asking if I knew anything about DC25's, she has one but the brushroll hasnt worked properly for a few years, could I take a look. Of course, I said, and her son bought it over earlier, saying "Good luck with the piece of sh!t..."

Fair enough, I thought, and put it to one side whilst I finished off another 25 I was refurbing for someone

Can you tell the difference?

Beardy points if you can tell the difference between the two of them...

Anyway, I fired it up, and sure enough the brushroll was dead. Grabbed the working rebuilt brushroll housing from the other 25, and it turned on fine, so that ruled out the switch, loom and reset switch, fair enough.

However, whilst fiddling around with the broken brushroll it fired up, then stopped. Interested, I put a finger on the brushroll, which kicked it into life, dragging my finger in and slightly melting the skin, it fecking hurts and makes rolling fags quite tricky. However, I ascertained (using the back of a screwdriver this time) that it works fine if you push on the brushroll  :boggleeye:

This vid shows what happens in use

(Sorry mods, still cant get the youtube tags to work...)

Stripped it down, and found nothing blatent, no snapped or loose wires. SWMBO came home from shopping by this point so I put it in a box for tomorrow. I intend to grab a multimeter and work out where the break is, I'll strip it fully down and see.

Motor looks a bit smeggy though

Sounds fine when it does spin though, so the motors obviously fine, anyone seen this issue before and have any pointers? If not, I'll carry on and report my findings! Will update you on my blister too, remember kids, don't put your fingers (or other parts of your body) near rotating stuff...

(tbh I forgot it was motor driven, I intended to clamp the brushroll to a stop whilst I scrabbled for the off switch, but the motor was too powerful...)

Look at the armature, see if one sector or more is burned.

Had a quick look this morning whilst eating breakfast through the side of the housing, all the segments look fine, bit smeggy but nothing too scary. As said, it span a treat when my finger was wrapped round the brushroll so can't imagine it's that. Will have the carbons out at some point just to be sure though

Looking at the housing I presume it doesn't come apart to have an internal look/cleanup... I'm still ering towards a loose connection somewhere!

It only takes one or two smeggy segments. Remember they only have a short life. That motor looks water damaged too.

I noticed that, either by actual water or immense dampness the whole brushroll housing is manky as, the machine smells like a dog died in it too, SWMBO made me put it in the shed!

Well, I had it all apart, cleaned up and inspected the wires, had the carbons out which looked fine, checked all the joints and the PCB visually, and couldn't see anything.

Put it all together to see if it had done anything and buggar me it ran beautifully. Did our hall rug and it was great. Smooth, quiet and groomed well.

I then took it upstairs to do up there, got halfway through our bedroom and it started pulsing again, until eventually it stopped running and pulsing, and started not running and blipping on. Damn!

I presume it's new PCB and motor time, I'd better let the owner know tomorrow. I would grab a multimeter and go through the steps in the sticky thread, but as it runs so well when it does go I presume the voltage will be OK?

Could be worth just changing the pcb first to see if that solves it, defiantly the cheapest first option.

She's happy to have a new motor and PCB, she's about to PayPal me the money, which I will immediately spend with mvacs! Then I'll refurb the housing so it has a fresh start

Then, I'll try and separate the old motor just to see if it can be done

I found the dyson medic post where someone linked to the Johnston documentation for the motor and a life of 67 hours is quotes! Surely better quality ones can be made!

I'm afraid the collector in me came out as I felt slightly bad that she spaffed £75 into my PayPal with no thought, and have stripped the cyclone too, and spent 15 minutes with a babywipe on the chassis will ensure it goes back looking good. Will put the filter and hose through the wash too over the weekend too. Won't componentise it though, not in that good a mood!

It is sheer madness isnt it! True built in bork factor! I must have old Hoovers with hundreds of hours on the clock and all they ask for is a stripdown and rebuild to remove 60+ years of grime and neglect from the moving parts! Whereas a DC25 brushroll motor with not even 3 solid days use on the clock goes and does one!

I can't wait to hammer it apart and see what the crack is! Will wait for the new stuff to arrive first though!
