Hoover Turbopower U2194 Refurb
« on: February 28, 2015, 06:21:29 pm »
I saw this on ebay for an incredibly cheap price, so, one thing lead to another and it was delivered to work last week. I took it round to mums at lunchtime and unpacked it

November 1984

Back at home, I had a closer look

it wasnt too great out the box. The belt kept slipping off on the lowest setting.

Had an old air freshener in it

The lower cord hook was in tact!

Seems to have had a replacement earlier base plate (the cable is brown as well)

Was in a right old state though

I had a set of tools about that I got from Freecycle, so set it up for above floor cleaning

Onto the stripdown then!

Trunnion cover off

It's a Perivale machine!

Eased the hinge pins out of the bag door

and out of the trunnion cover

Dirty

The smell dissapeared many years ago on this one!

threw it in the bin!

Bag door catch now

Screw out

and the bag door was stripped!

Can get to the rest more easily now though

The bag fill tube has washers under the screws, none of my other machines have this!

Lots of red dust was over everything! Was either powder paint or brick dust

Cover plate for the wiring was out next

Handle came off

Switch out

handle wiring plug comes out next

Has been jiggling about a bit I fear though

Cord clamp out

Wiring removed from the choc block

top cord hook removed

Up top was done, time for the bottom half

base plate off

Crap belt thrown away, and the activator removed

End caps were full of rubbish

Bearing housings looked fine though

Bearing components looked in very good condition

I binned the bearings, and took the belt guard out

Time to lift the hood

Height adjuster knob removed

Lightbulb was filthy

and the whole motor was covered in a film of carbon dust

The wires get unplugged from the junction box

The spinal cord can be removed now

Hinge plates out

Release pedal out

Locking ring pulls off

The bottom cord hook is imamgulate, and I left it well alone, dont want to snap it re-fitting it when it doesnt have to come off anyway

Crap pic but the cable tie holding the bellows on was removed

Motor clamp removed

and the motor lifts out

anti vibration foam removed

On the early ones, the front wheels are held in with brackets

The underside was covered in a layer of filth

Height adjuster out

Wheels off, and the outer caps need to be removed first. The tabs pop out easily from behind

Wheels are held in with small circlips

Furniture guard lifts off the chassis

Onto the motor now

Rubber seals/mounts off

Bellows off

The fan case comes off now

The motor casing comes apart now

After the fan... which also had red stuff underneath it

Wiring reference shot

reference mark made on the housing so it goes back together the right way round

4 screws out and it seperates

the armature lifts out

Top compression spring and washers pop out

Coil was in good condition

carbon brushes have a bit of life left in them

fancase bearing was shot

but the fancase itself in good condition

One box of washing

(camera lens was covered in dust, sorry for the lack of focus!)

more washing on the sofa

tub of non washables

and some screws

I cleaned up the gunk from the coils with a baby wipe

as they were a bit minging before

Wiped the spinal cord clean

and once everything was washed, I grabbed the motor and activator parts out for re-assembly

Carbon brush holders back in

Grabbed the turbopower box out, and grabbed a new motor bearing

which didnt fit, and upon closer inspection q know who have sent me the incorrect ones on my last order, so I have 10 random bearings, and 10 less tp motor bearings than I thought  >:(

Sorted the box out to seperate them and carried them on

Found a new re-greasable one, topped the grease up inside it and slotted it on

sat the coil back onto the fancase

top ancilleries back in

Wires re-fitted, and a new cable tie fitted

Didnt change the top bearing, as it felt fine, and they are a pain to change (may be able to change them in future though, will elaborate on that when I get to it) so I left it for now!

2 fan washers fitted

fan was cleaner now

fitted

I popped into the shed, and found the remains of the sealent I bought to re-seal the sump on my girlfriends stupid bloody vauxhall...

un-plugged the nozzle

and ran a (thicker than normal as I cut the nozzle wide for the sump mating face) bead around the housing. It stunk alot more than it did outside...

Seems to be a nice seal. I left it infront of the radiator overnight to cure

Onto the activator now. I think the activator is a replacement part too, should be brown not blue, but it's in such excellent condition I decided not to care!

2 shiny new brushroll bearings fitted

and the activator is back together

Onto the main machine now

motor foam glued back into place

end mount onto the fancase

Grabbed the height adjuster after that though, as its easier to fit without the motor in weighing it all down

Wheels on top

I then couldnt find the spring for hell, so I fitted the brackets so they wouldnt get lost either and moved on

Wheels refitted

and the caps back on

cleaned this cap up to get rid of the paint

Onto the bumper next

A good ciffing to remove all the gunk and it slotted back onto the chassis

motor mount fitted into the chassis

bellows fitted

and the motor slots into place!

Activator back in with a new genuine belt

Pivot points were greased up to avoid any more wear of them

the top half was sotted in behind the bellows and into place, after putting the reclining holding part in...

Screwed down

Spinal cord fed through

fitted the cord whilst there was still some slack before channeling it away

The bulb cleaned up nicely

I fitted the hood, then the baseplate

Top cord hook fitted

cord fed through

and wired up

wiring cover fitted

I fitted the handle wiring slightly differently, to ensure a good non sparky connection

Then pushed the handle body over that. The little palstic peg was missing sadly, so I improvised with a small screw with a nice head

refitted the switch

Bag door now, and the latch is refitted

Hinges were fitted, and the trunnion cover screwed in place

Bag fill tube back in place

The empty bag that came with the machine was previously used i think, and looked smeggy, so I found a nice new bag!

and finally, the bag door could be fitted!

Last night now, and I waved SWMBO off to work, Eva was at granny and grandads, so I taped up the decals on the machine

and got the rotary out!

Not all the damage came out, but the gloss and clarity came right back into the plastic!

Once polished and buffed, I covered it in a layer of wax and left it to haze

I found the height wheels spring under the sofa so fitted that

All the wax was buffed off, and she was done!

It worked much better after that!

Nice.

I never realised they were dirty fan machines.

Ah that explains it then, not much different from the old starlight/junior deluxe then, just a more modern dress.
