clutch working, then not working
« on: March 15, 2015, 03:56:41 pm »
Hi,

I have replaced the clutch on my DC07 as the brushbar wasn't rotating. If I switched the machine on before replacing the clutch cover and brushbar etc you can see the white plastic part of the clutch spinning, I then replaced everything and turned on the machine but brushbar isn't rotating and I can smell rubber.
The brushbar free spins OK and is clean. I then took the clutch cover off again and now the white plastic part isn't spinning. The other belt is fine and working, the clutch knob is on. This has happened on 3 different machines, am I missing something here?

Was the clutch a new or used one?

Were the machines in the reclined position?

Does the motor shaft run freely with the clutch belt removed?

A refurbished one, but I have a couple of others that have the same problem. I saw the video online of taking the clutch apart which was pretty easy but what actually goes wrong with them, is it the bit the ball bearings sit in just wears out?

Yes the machine needs to be reclined - brushes don't spin in the upright position.

Has the circlip come off the top of the clutch? I had one back 3 days after I sold it as the circlip popped off, jamming the whole thing solid and making the ratchety noise, but it could just cause one half not to spin.

Is the brushroll-clutch cog the right way round internally?

And yes, machine needs to be reclined at all times for the clutch to work.

Clutch not fully pushed back into the locating grooves,  and so belt running out of true?

I had the dc07 that I did the recent thread on back 2 days ago... She had flipped the carriage mech out so it wouldn't stand up,  and turned the clutch off...

She was very embarrassed when I fixed it.  I showed her what to do should it ever happen again...

We probably get three or four people through the door a week that have done the same. And another three or four with DC24's that want the reset button pressing.
