Due to changes in the industry, our DC04, DC07, DC14, DC27 and DC33 motors now have three buying options:-

Budget: These are what the suppliers call 'made to a price'. These are made to serve the bulk market where people buy on price only (eBay and Amazon for example). I am not terribly fond of them, but some people want cheap.

Premium: These are the super quality motors we have always used and sold that are made in the USA. As the pound is poor against the dollar at the moment, the price of these has risen a little of late. These are the ones we recommend. These are the ones we use on our own machines.

Genuine: While we are adding options, we decided to add genuine in there as well. For those that prefer a genuine part that comes in a Dyson box, we have now made the most popular YV2200 motor available from that page too.

It is normally impossible to judge the quality of what you are going to buy online when buying a motor for your Dyson (because you don't know what the seller will send you), and buying on price alone can be a false economy as this article suggests: Cheap Dyson Motors - 150 Reasons Not To Buy One. So we have decided to completely demystify it by offering three variants with honest descriptions. We think it better the end user can make an informed choice when buying a Dyson motor. We expect other sellers will follow our example.

Which types of motors are the most powerful, and which is the longest lasting?
I have a DC14 Origin fitted with a YDK motor and a DC14 Animal with the same looking motor. They are both, however different. One of them is lower pitched like a DC04 and the much louder one in my DC14 Origin has more suction. Both Dysons have had blown motors in the past and now have replacement ones.
I found motors on eBay for like £15-£25 brand new from people such as "Dysondoctor" etc. Would you recommend these? I last bought one of these in 2009 for a DC07. Not sure if anything has changed since then though.
Thanks

Kenley motors don't have a bad reputation, or the Q know who MTR240 is more trusted than the MTR299...

Ive fitted a 1600w ebay special before though and have had no issues.  Got lucky though possibly...

Genuine ones are the longest lasting.

Most of the stuff on eBay is made to a price so the sellers can compete with each other.

The original Dyson Doctor on eBay is no longer with us and his account is inactive. He used to sell motors of the type with no external TOC that we wont keep. Since then, someone else has been trying to steal his name on eBay, so caveat emptor.

The thing about anything you buy on eBay is that there is 13% off the top for selling fees. Take a cheap motor, knock off 13% fees, £3-£4 to post it, some VAT, some profit and what are you left with as a cost price? Not much.

Like anything, you can have cheap or good, and you must choose which.

Thanks, I had the type MTR240 motor with TOc, from the original Dyson Doctor, now there is Dyson doctor UK or something

I am still curious as to why my DC14 Animal has a different sounding motor to the Origin.

All after market motors are 1600w so will sound different from original Dyson motor's.

Cool, so I assume my DC14 Origin (the louder motor) has more suction slightly aswell and cleans better, so must be the 1600w one.
My DC14 animal does have the original genuine motor from a DC14 Allergy (early model) I got a year or two ago which was working healthy, but was in an awful physical state with one broken part (the cleaner head lock thing). The motor sounds a bit like a DC01 YDK, or a DC04 sort of, with a low pitch

The original Dyson Doctor you refer to was based on the Isle of Wight. The Dyson Doctor UK you mentioned is actually part of LM Electrical who have been on eBay for quite a long time. I also think that both Dyson Doctor UK and LM Electrical are in some way connected with Quаltex as I ordered something from Dyson Doctor UK and on the Invoice the return Address is Denton, Manchester. Isnt that where Quаltex are based?

He was. Malc he was called. He was a nice chap. We used to chat sometimes on the horn. He used to help us out with deals and stuff in the early days.

Yes, LM and several others are all Qtex.

In my experience YDK has always been our favourite to fit.

We have a few of the genuine heavy duty DC04 Constant Max motors left, YV-511 02 on our site. At £39 delivered, they are excellent value I think and will last years, and fit any DC04 with a YDK.

Would love one! Are they brand new? Also is the suction the same as a Dc07 motor? I know they look similar with a larger fan liunlike a standard 04 but have a lower wattage :/

Yes, I think we have maybe 25 left. I had them in a deal recently.

Well, here is a thing, the DC04 motor people say is bobbins fitted in a 7/14/33. We mis-diagnosed a DC33 machine recently (nobody is perfect) as just a service when actually the motor was on its last legs. As we had committed ourselves to a £35 service, I didn't want to send it out knowing it would blow up next week. We didn't have a good used YV2200 handy, so we tried a good used YV-511 (02) Constant Max variant in it just to see how it was. As it goes, it sounded and performed well, and the woman trundled off not knowing we had swallowed a replacement motor as part of a service. The customer did well, us not hearing a light bubbling motor initially meant she had a machine that should have had a motor job, but she got off with just a service charge. For us, it tells us that a Max motor is OK in later models.

The bloke who diagnosed it wrong got a kick up the arse. But it doesn't happen often.

Wow, well you learn something new everyday :icon_nod:
I presume they sound like a Dc33 fitted into a DC33 then :)

As you might know that my DC33 has a new motor with a shallower fan and fan rubber like the weird motors you have (they surprisingly fit and are being supplied by Dyson) and it's all good, no difference between this motor and a YV2200 DC14 motor except that it sounds quieter like a Dc41.

I appreciate that it's quieter (this weird new motor) but it doesn't seem original sounding like a DC41  :/

Speaking of motors, I finally got round to getting my DC07 a new motor
It said MTR299 in the box somewhere IIRC (last week) And the suction is great, sounds a little fake though and when you turn it off, the motor is literally dead in silence after about 2 and a half second whereas a genuine Dyson motor takes about  5 seconds. They gave me contact details so if it does blow up (I have no idea how long it will last) then I will tell them that it blew up and its not even a year old.

PS :off_topic: Is it me or do the lime green and grey Dc04 motors seem indestructible? They are tanks, I rarely ever see them burnt out yet I have seen clutched YDK DC04s with  burnt out motors, would be interesting to see the lifespan of a brand new constant max motor vs a brand new Ametek DC04 lime motor, think that would be interesting
