Dyson Hot AM04 oscillation problem, superb service.
« on: April 07, 2015, 07:49:04 pm »
I bought my AM04 way back in 2011, and had the recall work done last March, which gave me another 2 year warranty.
In the last few weeks I've noticed the oscillating mechanism has intermittently been 'clicking' and not turning properly.
I phoned Dyson this morning, and they've agreed to replace my AM04 with a BRAND NEW AM05 with no charge.
To say I'm impressed is an understatement. What fantastic service from Dyson. I was possibly expecting to have to return the AM04 for repair, but this is exemplorary service indeed.

Thank you Dyson  :tiphat:

I have an AM04, and it has always gave out something akin to an asthmatic tepid wheeze. I am curious to know if the newer model is any better. Do please report back when you have tested the newer one as to if is any better.

They've arranged delivery for Monday. Once I've tried it out I'll report back.
Incidentally do you know what the diffences are between the 04 & 05 ?

I am not sure to be honest. I was hoping you would tell me.  :chuckle:

My new AM05 arrived today. Visually I can find no difference between this and my original AM04.
The fan seems to throw out hot and cold air at quite a good lick, but then the AM04 that I had did so as well. It's no quieter than the original, and although not too loud on medium speeds, can get a lot louder at high speed.
The original was quite efficient at heating a medium sized room, and the AM05 is no exception.
I'm assuming the differences must be internal, and I've no idea what they are. The website is no help on the differences either.

Mine doesn't seem to have much of an airflow, and it went in for the recall and came back the same. I also find it only heats small rooms OK, in a bigger room it doesn't even raise the temperature a degree or two. Maybe I need an AM05 too.  ;D

(early 2013) I noticed a brown spot beginning to form on the lower part of the loop on my AM04, so i took a few thermal images of it, emailed them to dyson, and i was instructed to mail the unit to them for inspection, and they sent me a new one.

My family and i moved to Texas that summer, so the AM04 got put into storage, along with all my other stuff.

A while later, we got another email from dyson, this time issuing a recall on AM04 models.   We explained our situation to them; that the AM04 was in storage and couldn't be accessed until 2019 when we got back, dyson responded by saying that they will still honor the recall when the time comes.

Given it's now 2018, has there been any news on what modifications they apply to the AM04 to fix the issue?  Or will i end up with a different model replacement?

I know this probably isn't the correct place to post this, and its 3 years old, but i didn't want to create a new post in fear of making a duplicate for no reason :)

If they still honour it, I'd suggest they'll likely send you a newer model.

Well i certainly wouldn't be complaining if they did!     Thanks for the reply btw!

Off topic, but it does concern me that those coarse mesh intake screens are the only thing to stop dust being sucked into the machine, especially given that it's a heater so airflow across the elements is kinda important lol.

Update: They did!  Exchanged for a brand new AM09.  However it didn't stop there.
The first AM09 had quite a dramatic amount of play/wobble at the tilt mechanism.  So I sent a video to Dyson, and they exchanged it AGAIN.
This new one isn't perfect either. While the wobble is much reduced, the plastic along the back of the loop has already warped from heat, the motor has an annoying resonance at speed 2, and it creaks when oscillating.
Guess this is just how they are. Call me picky, but I just expected better quality.  It's a bit disappointing, especially when you consider the price of these.
But eh, I'm happy with it overall.  More airflow than the AM04, and much, much quieter.

I just expected better quality.

I have three Dyson Pure Cools at home and an AM05 (that was fixed under the recall too). The AM05 remains OK.

Of the Pure Cools (one of which is a hot and cool), one is OK, one has a fault with the digital display and one squeaks, clicks and groans when it oscillates. I agree quality could be better at the price point. The squeaky one I now dont set to oscillate, the one with a dodgy display displays 10c when it means 18c (middle bar gone). The old AM05 is still fine, although asthmatic and weak. And as you say, no filtration so you have to vacuum the vents often.

People do bring the early ones in for service, which involves stripping them down and airlining them out to make them quieter sans crap and dust.
