Dyson Dc04 Absolute Clutch Problems
« on: April 10, 2015, 03:31:14 pm »
Hi i have a dyson dc04 absolute plus which keeps making the ratchet sound. It really irritates me. I changed the belts and brushroll. No change.  >:(
On saturday i put in a new clutch and it was perfect. Used it there and then and not used since yesterday. As soon as i turned the machine on and reclined it it started. It only used to do this when the clutch was changed from off to on.
What am i doing wrong? I have successfully fixed, serviced and refurbed 2 dc07s, a dc14 , dc01, various cheap plastivacs and a dc24. So any help would be greatly appreciated as i am puzzled about the situation.

Is your foot plate or sole plate worn?  brush bar bearings?

Brush bearings were replaced very recently along with the brushbar itself so i cant see it being those and spins freely. Thats them out of the equation then. Soleplate also changed few months ago. Brush housing maybe.

However the clips that hold the cleaner head on are missing. It could be them but it worked fine before hand without. Can tackle most things to do with dysons but this really baffles me.  :'(

Photo not mine btw.

If the foot plate is worn where the brush bar housing fits this can cause problems, is the brush bar housing a tight fit in its 2 C shaped clips or dose it slip in and out easily?

The brush housing doesnt slip in and out easily and doesnt look worn around the belt area but the actual cleaner head is not clipped on at the sides. One dy the clips just pinged off and i never replaced them. Always forgot to. Would these cause these symptoms??

Possibly, but if the holes have elongated on the foot plate that could cause it, replace them and check the holes are round and a good fit. if they are ok it could be the brush bar housing or the axle in the brush bar, unless that was replaced.  Was the clutch pushed fully home and did you use all 3 screws?

I'd agree with the above, check you have the clutch fully home, they can sometimes take a fair bit of force to get them right down into the correct location, and if not fully home then they'll be misaligned, and will probably move up in use under load and belt tension.

????
I really cant see it being the brush bar as it was replaced and the machine used a max of about 10 times before the clutch went bad after the belt change. Brush bar housing is fine

I agree with Macman and Madrat, if the clutch is misaligned, it will lock up and ratchet.
