Dyson DC05 motorhead advice or general things?
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:52:52 pm »
Hi  ;D

Lovely DC05 motorhead on Gumtree! Has a faulty cable reel tho. Would it be worth going for? I have heard horror stories about the motorheads breaking at a certain point, rubbish switch reliability and a recall (which is the only thing I am certain about) and not sure if its safe to use. I have had 2 Dc05's, the longest one lasted was 2 months, the other lasted 1 minute.

Also are the motors same? Im worried about the complex wire set up and not sure if the machine can be turned on by the main unit :/
I have a bunch of cables from Dyson uprights if it helps, I looked for a cable rewind on ebay and nobody sells cheap used ones  :o so if not, as a temporary thing I could probably get a DC07 cable and connect it to the switch and the motor and shove all the cable in  ;D

Go for it, they are rare but fantastic machines, recall was to fit a collar round hose next to handle, as some could split at this point and expose power wires, was sent out to owners to fit themselves.  Think the motors were Panasonic and there is just an extra spade connection on them to power motorhead.  Easy to adapt and fit YDK.

The cord reel may just need re tensioning.

When I did my ab+, I managed to spin the spring off the small mount whilst playing with the tension. A very delicate twist back saw the spring clip itself back in and it round up nicely

Cables are easy to change, I bought 8m of black 2 core of the same thickness for £8 on eBay!

Easy to adapt and fit YDK.

Yes, but you need to change the motor housing and fan case seal to do so. Which means another scrap machine as they are unavailable new now.

PS yes the plastic for the upper motor housing, the lower motor cover, the post motor filter cover and the cyclone handle thing is also clear  ;D

I'm still worried about that foot power switch tho, looks like its either missing or not meant to be there as it can be done via the handle, is there meant to be a swich there?

Wow! You should get it anyway, faded minging DC05's for <£10 are plentiful! Grab one with no tools and a smashed wheel or something and voila!

Maybe try to get it down from £25, it is effectivly a jigsaw puzzle. I have spare screws if you need them too!

There's an LED indicator on the floor tool but it's controlled by the slider switch on the handle. That's a bit of a weak spot there though, and often smells of burning when the slider is knackered.
