Thanks yes that's a DC01 behind. my mum bought it brand new in 1995 I think. sine then its had a new motor, kick plate, wand, cyclone, hose and cable. the Dyson man replaced all of that years ago.

UPDATE: the DC04 burning smell has stopped
.the motor housing was full of black smelly soot from the old motor arcing
. all nice and clean now and now all I can smell is fairy liquid smell (apple) when I turn it on

and it seems unusual for a DC01 to have a new motor, lol. Was it burnt out or just a generous service? :P Either way it looks like in very good condition for 20 years old :O well done on keeping it so pristine!

Nope it dissent have a Ametek motor in it. I would like one for it though. Their are the more powerful one's

Omg a YDK motor in an early DC01? wow
BTW the YDK is more powerful actually :P Slightly more suction than the Ametek and the brush spins faster I think, hence grooms better but Ametek is quieter
