The Turbopower Junior U1100 is the first Turbopower Junior. I've always wanted one! Thanks to a fellow collector, I now own one! (and a fair few other machines now!)


May 1985, nearly 30 years old!

Hoover were still at Perivale by this point
Wasnt too dirty really

The bag has a hole in it now sadly, but they are pretty unobtanium now so not too upset

It had a genuine brand new bag in it which was nice. Put that to one side for now

However, it didn't sound too healthy... The first time I fired it up it was jammed, then there was a crunching sound and the motor started to turn to the standard in the vid...

So I started the stripdown

Bag fill tube off

One of the screws was quite rusty, but undid nicely enough!

All 4 screws undone and the bag assembly lifts off

The base lifts out of the bag

With all that removed the handle splits up now

The end cap pops off

There's a few holes in the bellows too...

Gingerly I removed the glamour cover for the handle. Very fragile these are...

Sadly the handle base was starting to corrode

I don't have anything to treat it as the cars aren't rusty, so I scraped the blown paint off and wire wooled it clean

This isn't good! The handle fork was rusted into 3. Would explain why the handle wasa bit floppy...


There was no spring at all on the lower cord hook. At least it has one though!!

Onto the underside next

Activator is in good order

Belt guide cover off

2 screws later and the hood comes off. No damage to the fixings either!!

Furniture Guard off

The clamps that hold the trunnion on are removed and the assembly pulls out


Another clamp for the motor and that comes out too

Bellows went in the bin and I
robbed borrowed one from another machine further down the refurb pile...

I was quite looking forward to getting the motor apart to see what the issues are, and it started quite early on when I took the fancase off and the fan fell out...

Had stripped itself clean somehow! New fan obtained from the shed.

Spindle looked fine though, must have worked loose over the last 30 years




I'm not 100% sure this is the original motors, I always thought early motors to have a different wiring setup, and different carbon brush connectors. My only old motor is fit for spares as the coil is damaged so this one will have to stay.

The fancase bearing was so bad! Never seen one quite as bad, I think it only rotated as crap as it did because me firing it up cracked it loose...

The top bearing was no better by any means

But a cleanup and new bearing pressed on had it spinning smoothly again

Wheels off next. Rare to have both complete!

Onto the activator now, which wasn't too great at spinning

This was seized, the axle was just spinning around the inner bit...

Everything was stripped now, so went for washing


The motor was the first thing to go back together

A nice new bearing went into the fancase



Quick check to make sure it spun smoothly

New fan on and nipped up to check it again, still smooth as butter

Took it all apart again and built it up





At this point I lashed it back into the chassis and did a test fire!

I rebuilt the activator with new bearings, end felts and end caps

and a new belt


Put the wheels back on, and noticed a difference with the later ones, the wheel assembly doesnt have to be slotted in, it just sits in the groove, and gets clamped down with 2 metal clamps!

Refitted the rear wheels too


And gave it a quick fire...

On with the new bellows


I fitted a new spring to the lower cord hook, so it now works almost as it should!


The trunnion was cracked, didn't think I;d fully get away with it, and the previous owner did mention it, so I glued up every crack I could find, and some re-inforcing gluing to prevent any future issues on common weak point


Once that had set and the trunnion was solid again, I heavily greased the pivot points as they were heavily scored and pitted

and screwed it up

Pulled the bellows through

I found a new handle chassis, so fitted that, along with the old handle brace.

Washed bag back on

Handle built up, wired in and assembled

Bag fill tube back on

Unused bag refitted

and the outer bag fitted

Almost there!

The cable was filthy, and being beige showed the dirt, so I spent an hour cleaning it up

Much better!


It leans a bit more than I think it should, but it's all intact so cant do much about it!

And finally I can run it round and let it vacuum for possibly over a decade...

This is now my earliest Turbopower! Sitting behind it is one of the latest from 1996...
