Soleplate rope seal
« on: June 19, 2015, 03:11:27 pm »
How much do missing rope seals affect the performance of a DC07, or for that matter DC04, DC14, DC33.

Personally I would say not much.

I like them better with soleplate seals coz my DC14 origin has them and can actually lift an entire mat off the floor and it sucks so well and picked up loads

I'm going to have conduct a test because that 2 votes each side, if you include myself & husband ( I'm with Madrat on this).
Some cyclone dust is needed and the new rope seals should be here sometime tomorrow.

Cool, BTW I threw away a mint Dyson DC07 Animal, even came with all tools but I kept them BTW. I threw it away because it was apparently not picking up well. The clutch was pristine, the brushbar was perfectish, all parts were in god condition and even when I took it apart all the way down to the motor to clean it (including the cyclones) I put it back together correctly, vacuumed the downstairs and it picked up a certain amount of dirt. That amount it picked up was a little more than a half of what our Dyson DC04 silver lime would pick up, or even what our DC25 Animal picked up. I then realised that the rope seals were missing and I felt extremely stupid! :( It would have picked up much more if it wasn't for the rope seals, but hey it's still an alright vacuum without the rope seals, just much better with them.

Just to add my own opinion on this, Dyson don't spend money on research & development for nothing. They will have exhaustively tested the machine design with and without these seals and have included them for a reason. They won't spend money on tooling up for no reason. I always fit these seals when reverbing a dyson if its designed originally with them. The difference with or without may be minimal.....but there will be a difference  ;)

Ok, test done and Parwaz and Doodster were correct, they make a good deal of difference;
Put some lovely clingy cyclone dust on the workshop carpet & rubbed it in a little.
First pass DC07 NO rope seals fitted.
Second pass rope seals fitted but the soleplate wasn't fitted correctly.
Third time seals in, soleplate seated down. I could feel the difference in vacuum suction.

Good question, they are stupidly expensive and only come one in a pack.

Not had to replace 1 yet, but what about using old fashioned waxed cord of the right thickness ?.

Should seal, I've used it once or twice in the past to make seals. How thick does it need to be ?. It used to be available up to 10mm.
Last time I bought some it was from eBay.

I find they break when removing them, then cleaning them/picking all the shite off. Normally just stuff them back into the channel in 2 bits. Now, I take them out, wash the base plate, put them back in and gently wipe it off with a baby wipe.

Never heard of wax cord either tbh!
