DC54 Cinetic: Wants a Motor Already.
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:57:47 pm »
I collected a machine from a customer on my way home tonight. One of these.

A newish DC54 Cinetic with no filters.

A quick look at it in the house, and the motor is popping and burning, and the motor bearings were screeching loudly. The machine has no signs of abuse, plaster dust/fire ash/shake 'n' vac or water ingress.

I did the decent thing and told the chap Dyson will repair it under warranty if he calls them. However, he said he didn't want to give his inside leg measurement on the phone for 20 minutes, couldn't be bothered looking for the receipt, and preferred we fixed it as we had done machines in the past for family members.  :king:

So as we don't see many of these yet, anyone interested in seeing how they come apart? I can do some photos if of interest.

Hell yes!

I've always smiled to myself when seeing the advert that I'll be able to pick one up for £20 in a few years time and have a play! Interested to see the state of the 'vibrating cones' (is this that machine) after a few years of use.

Also be interesting to see why the motors gone, would put money on it being dust related... Check the state of the fan on the old one...

I got asked about a DC41 MK2 the other day, politely said to go to dyson too, not being responsible for writing one off and having to shell out for a new one of those!

Definitely interested, didn't think I'd see one needing repairs already. Shows the no filter thing is nothing but a gimmick then  :))

I was surprised how easily the DC39 came apart, so shall be interesting to see if these are similar.

I thought so. We'll do a photo strip down.  :-*

At the moment, these are in Selfridges for an eye-watering £469.  :o

We try and avoid collecting/delivering machines now as its pretty time consuming for £0, but as it was one of these, and pretty much on my way home, I said I will go get it in case its a motor job and we can strip it down and do some photos.  :icon_nod:

Might be a bit early to say that, but yes, those were my thoughts too. I always thought the 'no filter' thing was a non starter.

They look pretty similar. Photo strip down to follow..........

I only collect/deliver if its in my town or en route to work. Get a fair bit of work from where we used to live which I go past twice a day so thats handy.

This lady who wants the vax is 12 b road miles from home,  and an absolute pain to get to from work. Would be quicker to come within 1 mile of home and go that way.  Not gonna happen love,  im stretching by asking an extra fiver as I jist want it gone!

Sorry,  back on topic...

Can you even get motors for these yet? Or is it used in something else? Or do you have special contacts? Or do I need to look at q?

I'm not 100% sure what is in it yet, my bet if the DC39 one. I am sure I can get one from somewhere whatever is in it.

They have been on backorder for months, we have had to fit used ones for people meanwhile. They have just come back in today.

It wouldnt surprise me if its a common motor with different mounts, and a different digit/letter on the serial number. The DC50 and DC24 motors are very alike, and with some changing of carbon brush holders would fit etc

The DC39 and DC54 look alike to me if you take off the cyclone assembly, but dont quote me on that though.  They both have the same suction I think, was surprised to learn they have 290 AW like a DC14! Wish their uprights had that.

Better to be straight with people I find. If we didn't get it this time, we would get it when it broke out of warranty. And being honest with people pays dividends as they then send all their friends and family and go writing nice things about you on the interwebs.

So we took it to bits today and the strip down topic is here.

Even trying to keep it down, its a £104 job. The motor is £50ish, the filter about £20, and about £30 to do it (which isn't enough really). Sounds a lot of money @ over £100, but the net profit on that doesn't boil down to a whole hill of beans. Especially not when we collected and delivered it back. I bet we are lucky to net £20 out of the job.

That said, it gave us a serial number we didn't have in our serial number checker, and a topic on here that will help others, and sell the odd motor and filter as people find it.

I think on future DC54's, we need to budget always for a filter, and to allow enough time to clean it properly, it needs to be a £125 job. We all learn as we go, what we lose on the roundabout, we gain on the swings.

If the filter is £20 then on the upright big ball it 's double the price as it has two filters for more airflow. Not really sure if Dyson are going to make a completely new ball vacuum and ditch the traditional DC41 design as they normally do, if so there should be more non genuine parts being made :)
