Dyson Turbobrush - Stripdown and Refurb

I've had this in the shed for aaages, and found it the other day.





It didnt work too well, so lets have it apart and see if it can be perked up a bit



The rubber squeegee snaps out from underneath



Front wheels snap out



Undo the 5 screws holding the clear head on and it seperates into 3 sections



Crap shot, but the head wasnt too bad



This is the main turbine assembly



Brushroll twists off the axle holders



The non moveable side snaps off



The two bits that hold the brushroll on need to come off. A bearing puller is pretty essential tbh for this bit





The turbine assembly then comes apart this much



The axles are held in place with a spring clip on either side



The best way I found is to hold the plastic casing firmly, and tap the axle with a hammer until the spring clip gives



Using the puller again, slide the brass bearing bush off the axle



The spring and spring clip fall off now



The half of the turbine casing you tapped the axle out of first comes off now



More tappy tappy and the other spring clip releases its grip on the turbine casing



You should now be left with just the turbine casing



The brushroll on/off mechanism pops off the other side



the red part pops out of the silver part



The top of the turbine housing levers up and out, releasing the inner turbine and belt





On to the main housing parts now



 The ends lever out and pop off, splitting the unit and releasing the hose



Some rubber bits come off



Little seal here





And it's as apart as it will get!



It was all washed and polished, then time to go back together.

Main seal back in. This is quite important to get it seated properly as its the main suction inlet to the whole thing





Rubbery bits back in



Main housing bits clipped together



Clip all the turbine bits back together with a drop of oil on all the moving parts



Slip the brass bushes and springs on the axles



and fit the airflow button



Brushrolls fitted



Take your freshly polished clear housing



and screw all 3 parts back together



Voila!





All done. Works MUCH better now, I attached it to my Hoover Galaxy which spun it up on the lowest setting right up to the highest.

Mods - feel free to put the part number for this head in the title, I have no idea what machine it came from, let alone what it fits (it fits the DC16, but that doesnt spin it up!)

Brilliant, never managed to get the turbine bit apart, always ended up with it split open about 1cm and picking the crap out with jewlers tools, then dosing with 3in1

On these, its the white wheel that breaks up usually.



Of course, you cant buy them. But they are the same across even the mini turbine heads. So old ones can be butchered to repair one.

We considered making them, but the tooling was mega money and not so many folks have the tech know-how to do the job. So it was a non-starter.

Have to say,  if it wasnt in as good condition it maybe wouldnt be worth stripping it,  but ive seen the question asked,  and this turbo heads last home was an old folks care home so I fancied giving it a wash...

I have the car turbine head (the smallest purple one that came with the DC14 vroom and the older car cleaning kit) Came with the £8 DC04 I got as faulty, new! lol
I'm bored of it, makes a really good carpet washing tool I must say, I want to get the large mini turbine head for my 14 Animal to make that perfectly complete and the clear other one for my 41 as mine's the early model.

PS that picture of the polished clear brushbar housing looks really good, I'm impressed with that!
The Dyson turbo brush I have took ages to strip down fully, it takes about the same time as replacing a DC07 clutch!

Think its a 39 cylindee but not sure.  The cord rewind is broken and its in the garage apparently,  amya mum knows to bring it home if it gets binned.  I offered to fix it too,  not heard back from that yet...

Awesome, might be a replacement I think, the early ball cylinder animals had a helix brush for the turbine head which looks niceish imo but thats me lol

Hopefully one day Eva will crack on herself! Hopefully she will know what to look  for and can start her own collection,  or at least not think im a sad old git for collecting them!

Lol nah, well she has a unique dad, a normal one but with the extra knowledge of vacuums, and is productive as there's lots of fun income from that hobby!

PS Next time we wash the carpets I will see if I can find the Dyson turbine head as that will be fantastic for the job

Tbh i dunno how it improved.  I hooked it up to my minty dc22 and it hardly span.  Kicked 2200w up its arse from the miele and it span.

There werent any hairs,  it was quite clean,  used not a lot,  and yet now work better on the galaxy from its creaky 300w up to its ok 1400w (must investigate that...)

They must be fragile old things. My stepmum had one new on their dc08 animal,  and i remember it was ace then slowed over the years with daily use.

Thinking about it,  they have something modern dyson now at the care home,  but have had many before (and none saved from the skip grrrrr)  so it may have been hangimg around.  Amys mum had a clear out and gave me loads of stubborn brushes too...

Ive offered to buy them a Quаltex sebo and give them the vat invoice but they wont,  cos they can trade in at currys on a new dyson for less...  I told them to let me know when they next do that and ill give them something worth trading in... Amys work are dicks though...
