Re' the top filter on the DC08.
I note that even though it's easy to wash out the blue rubber insert, the white 'material' component of the yellow plastic holder is quite dark now and not that easy to clean up and see light through. I've heard that even if the rubber insert is clean, if this material component of the yellow plastic holder becomes blocked then it will reduce suction.

My question is, what if the material component was cut away from the yellow filter casing and then have only the blue rubber component inserted and acting as the filter. Having to wash the rubber component more regularly is not a problem.

Would this improve suction?
or
Would doing this cause damage in some way to the motor?

I wouldn't advise it, and given the price of a replacement filter is it worth potentially killing you dyson

Madrat - Thanks. Probably good advice, was thinking that too. (but also wondering what the point was of having a filter that was only part washable!)

If you put the filter and cage through the wash, but apart, so sponge out of the cage, on a longish hot wash with plenty of powder and no softener, it brings them uo a treat sometimes.

Obv better to do this with a full load of towels or bedclothes to save wasting a whole wash on one filter though.

Or buy a new one, their under a tenner!

All the filter is washable, not just the sponge.

Thanks again for the replies. I'll biff the filter cage into the next wash and see how it goes!
(seems prices for the filters are higher here, plus I'd have to add postage to where I am!)

Aaah, just seen your country of origin!

A wash may be a good idea! Just ensure it's fully dry. Once spun, their pretty dry anyway, an overnight stay in the airing cupboard, or somewhere warm will finish it off nicely! The cage will still have a bit of grit in it that always seems to get through the sponge filter but all the rest of the crap should wash out!

Stuff is really expensive in Oz and NZ, we sell quite a bit of stuff there. The filter you want is here, and the site works out delivery during checkout. Worth a look to see if cheap enough.
