DC23 MOTOR
« on: September 03, 2015, 07:00:15 pm »
Hi "Fonts of all knowledge in the Dyson World people"  :king:

Does anyone know if there is anything special about the DC23 motor ? I have a machine that needs a new one and wondered if a DCo8 one would fit ?

Cheers

Scott

I think, but don't quote me on this, the fan housing is shallower that the dc08 motors.

Ok, thanks....if that's the case I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get the more expensive one then  :( twice the price of the DC08 one  :'(

Ah, wondered what that little shaft was for....I'll strip it down and take a closer look.

It has a YV-16K24B in it. It is like a YDK fitted to an upright, but one side of the shaft has a flat edge to drive the cooling fan. If the fan is OK and you can get it off without breaking it, there are non-genuine ones available. If the fan is knackered, you need a genuine one.

A decent engineer could fashion an upright YDK shaft to run the cooling fan. But if it runs off centre it will break up the fan the first time you run it, so randomly flashing a grinder down it will be hit and miss.

In theory, you could put a DC08 motor in there, but it may overheat as the cooling assembly is there for a reason we assume.

Thanks m-vacs

I am an engineer by trade and have access to a very well equipped tool room but to be honest I'll simply get the correct motor to save time. I agree on the cooling system that dyson engineers have designed and fitted the fans for a reason as I assume they would have tested them and found the heat generated from use was too high when testing in 'worst case scenario' like hot climates, prolonged use etc.

Many thanks for the explanation.

That being the case, you can take any YV2200 or similar YDK motor, lock the shaft and flick out a flat spot on the shaft same as the original.

If you have time and equipment you may choose to do that. As you suggested already, we tend to go the route of less work and fit a non gen if we can as it solves it for not too much money. I suppose the decision is based on what you intend to do with the machine.

Unusually, with this one, we sell more genuine motors than after-market. They sell more to France, Germany, Belgium and Holland where these machines were more popular. In other markets they are called a DC32.
