How to reassemble the spring collar on a DC08 extension tube

The spring collar for adjusting the length of the extension tube on my DC08 suddenly came apart.



I've managed to put it back together with the lower section aligned to engage with the spring loaded ratchets and the prong on the top ring about 90 degrees round from the ratchets. It "sort of" works but the collar is able to slip round slightly and jam making it difficult to alter the lenght.

I assume that I didn't align the top part correctly but it now seems very reluctant to come apart again. What's the correct procedure for dismmantling it and how should it be aligned when put back?
