DCO7 - No suction with crevice tool
« on: December 12, 2015, 07:30:06 pm »
New member located in California.

Received an used DCO7 about a year ago.

Few months back the crevice tool lost suction.

Exchanged messages with Dyson site. Followed instruction to check and clear blockage (there was no blockage found).

The carpet cleaner continues to work fine.

Perhaps a forum member faced a similar situation and can help.

Thank you.

Have you checked the hose for holes and splits? Failing that there must be a blockage somewhere.

Did Dyson talk you through checking for blockages? In the u bend,  changeover valve and hose itself?

Does the pitch of the motor change when you stand it up to use the tools,  then change back when you recline it down to use the floor part?

Welcome by the way! I think you mean tools too,  rather than crevice tool.  The crevice tool sits behind the wand.  If that's blocked,  push a screwdriver through it!

Thank you, responders.

Mvacs: Re: Workshop Manual, that option is not for me.....not good with tools.

beko1987: All possible blockage points checked and found clean.

Re: "pitch of the motor" -- Shall have to check and report back.

Madrat: No "holes and splits" detected.

As stated in my first post, the unit works fine when I use it for floor and carpet.

When it's running and there is fluff in the bin dose it move around as much when the machine is upright as it dose when it's reclined?

That is weird! My first thought would be changeover valve,  but if you say that's not blocked...

The u bend at the bottom rear that makes the suction channel to the wand,  is it there,  and does it meet with a rubber seal underneath the machine?

Best way to check the motor pitch is to turn it on upright,  when there should be suction pouring out of the hose,  then take the cyclone off.  You should hear a blatant massive difference!

Failing that,  it'd troubleshooting time.

The suction goes from the motor to the right hand higher hole on the chassis (with the bin off,  check that with your hand)
From there it goes through the cyclone,  through the left hand lower hole then down to the lh (as you look at it) changeover valve.  Remove the blockage channel at the lower lh side and check for suction.  Should be there when reclined and upright.
Next,  take the wand and hose off.  Hose comes off by removing the wand,  pulling the tab at the top of the bottom hose bit out and pulling up.  Hose should come off.  Is there suction coming out of where the hose went when the machine is upright?

beko1987: The u-bend is there.

Unable check for rubber seal underneath the machine -- handicapped due to recent injury from a fall. Will have to wait for a friend to help.

Madrat: Don't see much movement  of fluff (there is not much in the bin).

Thank you.

Some people use their Dyson normally with a slightly clogged filter and still think it's fine because the brush does most of the work picking everything up and the suction draws it (whatever's at the back of the soleplate) away into the bin. With the hose, there is only suction and that's when people  notice it has a loss of suction. So, either the filter might be blocked (common thing) or the cyclones might be blocked (common with Dc07's aswell) resulting in loss of suction.

Here's something you can try:
Remove the soleplate underneath the vacuum by turning the 3 plastic fastners 90 degrees with a coin or flat blade screw driver. Turn the brushbar off and recline the vacuum. Turn the vacuum on and feel the suction from that little hose underneath the vacuum. Is it the same suction as the suction via the hose? If so, the problem is a blockage somewhere either in the cyclone, filter or ducting before the bin.
If the suction is different, the problem lies between the wand & tools you're using and the U bend at the bottom rear of the vacuum.

Hope this helps

Followed your suggestion.  The suction is different.

At this point, my age and lack of skill make it necessary to take it to a repair shop.

Grateful for advices received from members.  Appreciate the time given to assist.

If the suction is different then it's a blockage in the pipe area, Remove the U bend by un-clipping it with the brightly coloured catch and it pulls off downwards.  Inspect it for any cracks and blockages. Insert something small in one end and if it comes out the other end, there's no blockage. Do the same with the hose and wand along with the tools :)
