Fabulous Stainless Flat Blade Barbecue Skewers Due In.
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:22:15 pm »
A little sideline here I wanted to try.

I do like a barbie, but getting long, good quality, stainless, flat blade skewers in this country is close to impossible. The only place you get really good ones is in Scandinavia, the Baltics and Russia. I have bought them in the past there and brought them back to sell. They always fly out.

The three in the centre of the pic below are the exact type coming.

I bought my best set [above] in Russia, 3mm thick, long enough to go across a big circular Weber and awesome. But I couldn't buy them in quantity, so I had them made [copied exactly] instead there.

So the ones coming in are the original Russian design, made from proper catering grade stainless steel and 3mm thick; identical in every way to the old Russian ones I have. You'll not buy better.

They are on the way now, we will have them February ish. I'll update when they are photographed and on sale in case anyone is interested.

These are due in the country in a week. So probably two weeks till we physically have them.

Price not worked out yet, depends on the shipping, customs, clearance and VAT costs on what is over 2 tonnes of them. But they will be good value for what they are.

I am quite enthusiastic about the barbie now; so much so, I imported all my skewers, special fish grilles, tons of marinades, oil brushes and all kinds of stuff from Russia (my wife is Russian so child's play for her to search this stuff in Cyrillic), as the stuff in the UK is just total crap and very over-priced compared to what is available out there.

I've used loads of different flat blade skewers over the years. The particular set I got in Russia a couple of years ago knocked spots off all the others. When we went back, we tried to find the seller again, but he had gone. Finding the factory that made them proved equally fruitless (probably just some little engineering shop).

Why I had them re-made to proper spec. Even down to having them use a spectrometer on the metal so we got the right grade as the originals I have cooked with. The factory suggested they were over-engineered, too heavy and too thick for domestic use. We could save money by making them thinner and out of lesser metal and have a lower price point they said. But that isnt the point at all; the point is to make a nice product that people who know about this stuff will look at, nod and say, "nice". And then happily use them forever.  :icon_nod:

People buy Le Creuset pans and expensive ceramic knives because they are proper. Anyone who likes a barbie couldn't get proper skewers here before (I tried). So I solved that just before barbie season.

When I arrived this morning, there was a Russian registered truck outside and blokes unloading boxes. The long-awaited barbecue skewers have arrived.  :icon_nod:

I am *really* pleased with the end product; quality is spot on. If you like a barbie, these are a no-brainer at the money. Just £7.99 plus £3.99 delivery (but delivery is free if total order - inc Dyson parts - is over £30). You can find them on our shop here: Barbecue Skewers - Long Blade Type. 70cm.

You just reminded me, a friend had some cast iron or wrought iron skewers about 10 years ago as a wedding present, have never been able to find anything like it since, I love cooking with cast iron.

Cast iron rusts though doesn't it? So you have to oil them after cleaning them. As I do with my steak skillet.

These have started to drip out already despite the cool weather, a few sold today already, mostly to Polish sounding names as usual (we are going to list them on the platforms in the coming days in Polish and Russian so they get on search engines in those languages in the UK). I did notice a certain Mr R Skull esq. had wisely availed himself of a a set.  ;D

I thought I would share a couple of photos of how these are typically used in Russia (pork with yoghurt based marinade is more popular in Russia).

This is my barbie in Estonia........

The three below are from one of our other sites from peoples dachas in Russia.

In the UK we might typically use them over Webers and other similar barbies we tend to use.

This is our back garden in the UK.

Using skewers this way allows you to better control the cooking of the meat, keep them further from the heat source, off the hot grill they might otherwise stick to, and reduce blackening. Also as these skewers are so thick, the skewer heats up and assists in cooking by transmitting heat down the length thus cooking from within as well. This reduces cooking times and makes for juicier meat. I first saw this style of cooking by my father-in-law at our family dacha by the Volga river in Russia about ten years ago. I tried various types of skewer from several countries. The Russian type that are my favourite ones to use are these ones I have had made. Once you have the hang of it, you wont barbecue any other way.

I recommend marinated chicken fillet or fillet steak pieces.  :king:
