How good is a cheap Miele?

The Purchase

a few months back I was perusing the vacuum forums on Facebook and came across a Miele C3 in my very small village for all of £10!!! instantly I knew I should buy it. If you don't know C3 was launched in 2014 to comply with the EU regulations, which means my Miele could be up to 4 years old. My general Miele knowledge tells me it is a bottom spec C3 so nothing particularly special however when new it was still a Miele and they don't come cheap! After a very short email session with the seller, the sale had been agreed and I was due to collect it the following weekend.

First Impressions

I was made aware by the seller that the cleaner had "some minor issues" these Mieles have a few faults, one being the cord rewind so when he said it needed a new motor I knew exactly which area to go to. As soon as I got it home I opened it up and was greeted by a complete mess within the motor.

Post Op Opinion
After a clean out and a service the cleaner was looking practically new, in fact, I blame generic pattern bags for the mess created in the motor. I gave it a few runs around my house and concluded that I wasn't, in fact, a bad cleaner, I have quite a deep pile carpet and a straight suction cleaner usually jumps but thanks to the speed control on the Miele it glides over the pile without issue. The cleaner Itself isn't too cumbersome like a Henry but it doesn't maneuver perfectly on thicker carpet due to the smaller wheels.

Verdict

For under £150 I think the C3 is a good buy, yes the parts are expensive however the machine is a quality product and is built to last. for the money I paid I couldn't be happier but feel if id bought it new I wouldn't like it quite as much. like all cleaners, it's down to your home situation and whether or not it will work with you, however, it is ideal for what I want and what I need. the comfort rewind is lovely and does save time. if you like tech then buy a high spec model but if you just want a Miele then buy a bottom range as simple as you like C3 powerline.

People do seem to think that pattern bags kill Miele vacuums.

Thats because they do

Not a valid youtube URL
Even the copy hepaflo type ones cant cope, there's just so much airflow that the fine dust is pulled straight through! Seen it so many times now!

They are the only vacuum I have seen it on more than once though, everything else seems fine, although apparently Numatics can do it with the pattern hepaflo bags, but I've not really used one enough to reliably compare.

Pattern bags really kill Mieles. I tired a pattern one and after three short uses it had leaked dust in the compartment.

Non genuine ones. You can get away with them on alot of vacs, but not miele, the airflow is too great and it pulls all the fine dust out of the bag and into the motor

Yes I agree patern bags kill mieles.
I allways fit genuine bags when I service a machine and allways show the consumer how to check there fitted correctly by removing the hose and ensuring the plastic dust flap is open and not closed.

Hello again!

I've been having such difficulty pulling bags out of my Miele S716, I accidentally pulled out the bag holder last week. Thanks for helping me get it back in place (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2118.msg32114.html#msg32114.)

Are these what are known as "pattern bags?" In which case having read this thread, I should go back to Miele's own.

I've been using these compatible bags for a while. May they have damaged my cleaner eg got dust where it shouldn't and is there anything easy I can do about that? I'm not capable of stripping it down but if it's just a matter of unscrewing some of the outer shell and brushing/vacuuming something (motor?), I could probably manage that.

Or better I leave it as it is maybe!

Thanks.

Edit. I was also trying to work out why it's been so difficult to remove used bags and I wondered if it's because I've been using compatible bags, rather than Miele's own which are so expensive. Nope. Just tried a Miele brand bag and it still gets stuck. They aren't the same as the Miele ones I was able to get years ago. I added a question about it to the thread linked above.]

I'm not sure what you mean by

... removing the hose and ensuring the plastic dust flap is open and not closed.

I can open the lid of the cleaner and see the dustbag there with the little flap but don't think that's what you mean.
