Valve switch not staying put

Hi there everybody

I'm only new here joined tonight as I seem to be having a problem with what I believe is called the valve switch on my Upright Dyson DC24 Model.

I have never had any problem with it before today' everything has been fine till tonight'

What grabbed my attention is how the tubing that runs up the left hand side of the vacuum is not sitting flush over the hole that's below it' it's sitting to the rightful hand side of the vaccum.

When I get the valve switch and Turn it clockwise ( to the right ) hand side of the vacuum it does send the tubing sliding back over the hole ( to the left ) which then makes it sit flush over the top of the hole'

But...
The valve switch will not stay locked in to position ( to the right ) it swings right back around to the left ( anticlockwise) and the tubing goes back over to the right again which has left the tubing not to be flush over the top of the hole.

I gather that when the vacuum sucks' whatever it picks up' it then sends it up the left hand side of the vacuum then spits it into the canister.

( I have described it as best as I possibly can' )

So basically I'm wanting to know what is stopping the valve wheel from staying in position ( clockwise to the right ) so the tubing is flush over the hole!
PLEASE HELP ME!

First off, awesome pictures!

The valve assembly is operated by the wand, so when the wand is inserted, it pushes the flap underneath it down, which rotates the clear part and moves the valve to divert the suction to the cleaner head. When you take the wand out, the flap springs shut, sealing the wand suction channel and moving the valve across for wand cleaning.

Looking at the pictures, the valve looks to be ok. It doesnt sit 100% flush over the hole as there is a rubber seal that sits between the little hose and the valve, which takes up the slack. Do you hear any air escaping through it? If you take the wand off and block the hose, does the machine 'block' or does air escape from the valve area? If you take the little side square hose off, put the wand back so it moves the valve to 'floor' mode, any air escaping then?

If it's still airtight, I wouldn't worry. If not, then check that all the moving parts are clean, clear and not clogged up with dirt. I made a stripdown and refurb thread in the First Gen Ball forum if you need pointers on where to clean.

Is the end of the wand where the tools go worn at all? To check, you could try and move the plastic flap that gets pushed about by the wand and see if that takes up any of the slack? I've never known them to be that worn though so I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue

Thanks for your kind compliment on the pictures' I was just trying to show as clearly as I could to the problem that i encountered .

Now trying to remember evrrything that u suggested'

No' I'm pretty sure that there is no air escaping at all ' because when I put my hand over the wand part when it's connected it most definitely blocks.

And the same as well when the wand part is fully disconnected from the bigger main hose that runs up the back of the system'
It reacts to my touch when I place my hand over the top of it and also blocks.

And also all good when I put it back into floor mode.
No air seems to be escaping.

( My OCD is about to kick in here ) lol
And ...
I can most definitely say that both of the HEPA filters are clean as they could possibly be and are not clogged up with dirt or anything else as I wash them out twice a week' along with the main canister that holds all the dirt etc it has vacuumed up!
 
And also with the hoses' tubing' I'm sure they are not clogged up with anything either as I'm the only one to use it in my home and are quite careful not to suck big items up. As it's an investment that I wish to reek from for many more years to come. So I look after it' so it can look after my home in return!

from what I can see nothing in that area seems to be worn or damaged' but I will have a go at doing that to the plastic flappy thing! Lol

So with all of that' said n done'
What would your final outcome be of my problem?

I'd say don't worry about it too much, it all sounds like it's working fine. You could always sick up a button/piece of pasta through the wand and then the brushroll housing to check the air paths, but you would notice a blockage I think.

"As it's an investment that I wish to reek from for many more years to come. So I look after it' so it can look after my home in return!" Good idea, and it's the right way to treat a vacuum cleaner. The DC24 does have a reputation for wearing the motor out through general use though, so don't be surprised if it does fail one day, they only have a finite run time, same with the brushroll motor. Luckily the parts are not too expensive to replace. It's not like a Hoover from the 1940s that will run until the end of time sadly!

Unless you notice something moving the wand flap manually, I would just keep calm and carry on, and keep washing the filters, it's the best thing you can do! The pre motor filter (on top of the cyclone) likes going through the washing machine too, then dry it in the airing cupboard/on a radiator for a day, will be good as new!

If you wanted to be really OCD about it you could split the cyclone and check the foam gasket that sits between the two halves, they wear alot with the fine grit that passes through the cyclone. Mvacs sell it for under £4. But then, what you don't know won't hurt you etc, if it feels fine, and works fine, then it probably is fine!

PS Beckah, when the wand is removed, the changeover valve should automatically turn and when the wand is put back into the vacuum, the changeover valve should turn back to it's original position. I also love your pictures too! Very classy
