A late, YDK DC01 from Freecycle
« on: January 23, 2016, 04:09:47 pm »
I picked this up the other week from Freecycle. It went straight in the shed, and stayed there for a few weeks, the first pictures I took of it to show Parwaz being from the shed

I had a day on my own today, so spent the morning fettling my car in various ways, then got it out of the shed (should have really tidied the shed up tbh but meh, another day)

It's slightly faded but otherwise very clean. Tiny bit of damage to the top of the wand, but that should glue up

The later phone number (My DC01 Standard in the loft has the earlier 011 number)

The filter flap is not broken

The filters were pretty dirty

So I got some new ones out

I then had a look at the brushroll

Noticed that one of the wheel guards was broken

Found a clog

Took the brushroll out

and the end caps off

and got cutting

The brushroll is very worn though, and so, so soft!

Fitted a new belt

and fitted the baseplate I bought from Mvacs that came this morning

Because the one on it was incomplete and cracked

The mvacs one much better

The cable needs a tidy up too

The hose is also torn. This WAS mentioned on the freecycle ad at least!

Luckily I have a good one under Eva's bed upstairs

I then made it clean up its own mess

which it did very well, despite the very soft brushroll. Suction is good too, and the motor sounds brilliant.

After this, I used it to empty out the bag in the Miele (we all had our hair cut last weekend at home, and it filled the 2 week old bag up in the Miele, and it felt like a waste so I sucked the hair back out. I would have used the DC39 but I didnt pick it up until after the haircut... (found it whilst Amy was having hers done)

It did rather well

I'm torn now though, I was going to keep it, since it is a late one, and I have an early one. But the missing wheel trim and fading put me off a bit, and Amys cousin and his bird need a better vacuum, this refurbed would be good for their 1 bed flat, better than the asda value bagless vac they have now...

Still, I'll refurbish it in time, it's too good to die! The cyclone stickers are mint.

Very nice! My one has that exact same style of serial number, I'm guessing it's a 2000 model  or something. Mine had a grey hose though. Weird your one has an Ametek motor for a late machine lol

Most late DC01's I come across are in good nick anyway, or maybe it's luck (dunno) and are 10000000 times better than a crappy asda vacuum lol

Is it amtek or ydk then? I thought the later ones were all ydk? I'll have to get the thread title amended...

Guess I'll have to pop the motor out and check

Pretty sure it's Ametek

The YDK Dc01's sounds very similar to a non clutched lime DC04 ;)
The Ametek ones sound like a Vax 121 or 6131 IMHO

Lol ;D When we had a Vax 6140 and a DC01 Ametek, they both sounded similar!

It doesn't deserve a brand new wand,  the one it has is fine,  and is faded to match the rest of the machine!

Thanks! I've got a non faded dc01 wand in the cupboard in Eva's room for keeps.  The wand on this has a crack at the top which seems solid still,  will drip some glue into it to stop it getting any worse.

DC01 wands have a habit of cracking where the tools slide on, really don't know how they manage to break :/ Overall a nice solid tank of a vacuum

it sounds like it will be a amtek or it had a ydk and they changed it

Not possible to change a motor from Ametek to YDK on a Dc01 or YDK to Ametek because the wires have different connections and the housings are different shapes

I knew someone was going to point that out to me. they may had a old dc01 that had the plastic bits for the motor. pass but I'm very sure it should not have a ametek motor in it
