Another Rotork Cyclon Vacuum Cleaner We Saw Today.
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:26:31 pm »
A gentleman whose DC07 we repaired recently also had a Cyclon Rotork tucked away at home. When he came to collect his machine, he brought it with him considering selling it.

>>We have one of these as well<< that is almost finished.

The machine was in excellent condition; the best I have seen. As it goes, a deal wasn't done as he has decided to keep it. Or put another way, it would take more than I think it is worth (to me) to own it.

While it was in our shop, I snapped a few pics of it as I know people are interested in these. And we enjoyed chatting to the chap about it, and seeing it as well, as these are quite rare in this condition.

(Yes, that is a brand new DC04 in the background, get in touch if you want it)

If anyone reading this happens to have one of these, dead or alive, or any parts for them, then do get in touch as we are in the market for anything Rotork or G-Force if its reasonable money.

Wow! That is clean.

Shame he didn't sell it,  but I bet you took pics of everything yours is missing,  and can make yours as spot on as it can be...

You never know,  few months/years when he still has it he may reconsider,  although if it turns up on eBay it could get messy,  but would you post it? I wouldn't,  and I've never seen one in the flesh.

Still,  great photos!

Actually, work started on ours again today.  :chuckle:

It was planned, as I want it ready for our new shop - there is an empty cabinet waiting for it.

The chap has perused the forums here, and is coming to have a peek at our new place, I'm sure if he does decide to sell it, we will get first shout.  :icon_nod:

but I bet you took pics of everything yours is missing, and can make yours as spot on as it can be...

Yes, I saw the brushroll I needed to see and compared the one I made for ours to it, and how it fitted at each side that I wanted to see. I did a good job. I have now seen the tools as well that nobody had a pic of. Ours wont be quite as original as his, but will be a decent example nonetheless.

So another one of these is out there.

This one is an exhibit at the Frenchay Village Museum in Bristol.

The curator told us:

Quote
Jeremy Fry, the founder of Rotork was born and raised in the village, and the MD of Kleeneze lived here. It was given to us my Michael Mollett - a cousin of Jeremy's - who was the sales manager for the project.

They happened upon some of the info we have here on these, and dropped us a line.

Curiously, we may have another in the near future. A collector is selling us some machines and there is one in the collection, so it [or ours depending], may become available.

Were these actually sold?

Yes, at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1984.

Blimey, no offense to all of you Dyson geeks, but if I saw that in a shop I'd think it was a kids toy lol.

I always thought these were the first prototypes they threw together using what ever they could find laying about and in hardware shops ;/

There are two similar versions, the Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon was first I think in 1984 ish, about 550 were made, and most sold in the UK at the Ideal Home Exhibition for £200-£300 ish (strong money for a vacuum back then -  but at the time we were paying that for Betamax video recorders).

Then later on, the G-Force (which looks almost identical) was sold in Japan (not sure how many) and won a design award there in 1991, suddenly they became somewhat iconic in Japan and were selling for $2000 each. The little "about Dyson" book they put with some new machines mentions this and has a G-Force photo. The G-Force was his 'three bells in a row' moment that started the money train.....

The money James Dyson made from the Japanese licence agreement on the G-Force, funded him to start producing the - far better - DC01. And the rest we know.........

The Rotork and the G-Force are essentially low volume machines that were market tested we can regard as prototypes or early production variants of the DC01. Although not branded as Dyson as they were produced by others on his behalf (as with the American Fantom/Iona Fury we have one of). The Rotork was produced by Zanussi in Italy and the G-Force by Apex in Japan if memory serves.

You're like a Dyson Dictionary

Wikipedia is the word - but I know more than those pages.  :king:

So now there is a Rotork Cyclon for sale, and the info is on this topic.

Haha well everybody loves a bit of Wikipedia!
Even though some of the info on there is wrong due to people not knowing the right info when they write the articles
