DC14 Motor Change
« on: August 20, 2016, 05:58:45 pm »
Hi,

We have a DC14 Origin, which works, but is battered and not very good anymore, the bin doesn't stay on very well since it was dropped, and the sole plate at the bottom is loose and always falling off.

My parents DC14 Animal has just broken, motor went, so I have got hold of it and swapped the motor from my DC14 Origin into the DC14 Animal.

The Origin had the Samsung motor in it, and the Animal had a YDK in it.

I have swapped the larger rubber cap that you first see when you get to the motor, but I didn't swap the smaller one at the other end as the holes weren't the same for it to line up, so when it went back in the casing it wouldn't have been in the same orientation when the small and large lugs on the smaller rubber grommet were lined up (hope that makes sense)

Everything went back together fine, and the drive belts went over the motor shaft ok, the beater bar spins no problem, but there is absolutely no suction at all from it, nothing what so ever.

I think I know the answer to this, but looking for confirmation. Is this something to do with the small rubber seal by the exposed motor shaft end? I am guessing from what I have now seen, that the casing the motor goes in is what causes the vacuum and creates the suction?

Does the orientation of the motor within the casing matter or not? Any idea's on where I have gone wrong would be appreciated before i have to go buy a new one before getting murdered by her in doors  ;)

Thanks

Is the smaller of the two rubbers located on the top of the motor and in the housing correctly? As long as the rubber is located on the motor with the pins, and the keyhole shape thingy is lined up, and it went back together easy enough, I'd suspect that is alright.

Do you have any suction at the chassis hole with the cyclone off?

Yeah the smaller rubber seal is lined up properly big to big, small to small etc.

I've had the motor in and out twice, the first time I kept the same large cover on it that was on it when it was in the origin, and it was a nightmare to get back in the casing, so I stripped it down again put the YDK cover on it then put it back in (so the YDK cover was on the Samsung motor, but in the housing the original YDK motor came out from). But still no suction.

There is no suction from any part, with or without it standing upright, through the tube, at the bottom of it with the tube removed, or through either hole that the cyclone connects to (not sure which is in and which is out - left or right so checked both), but nothing on anything.

So I've stripped it down again, and this time taken some pics and a video of it, hoping that might help

Pics of the end seal

And a video of the the motor, sparking quite a bit, making a strange noise and weird smell, me thinks it's not too healthy.

It isnt fitted right. The motor spindle isnt sticking out far enough. And I am surprised the motor still runs at all as there is no need for a hammer anywhere in the proceedings. And that motor spindle has been hammered.

Edit: Having watched the video, all that blue sparking is of a knackered motor. Probably hammering it moved the armature.

That motor is scrap.

It was hammered to get it out the old casing, it was the only way to get it to shift as it was a VERY tight fit, the guide I found two guides and both said to use a hammer to get it out.

I wondered why people do that. If there are guides out there suggesting using a hammer, that explains it. You hold the casing against the floor, pin on the floor and push.

How do you get it to go in further into the casing then? I have applied as much pressure as I can to it, and gently tapped around the outside of the motor from either side with the handle end of a screw driver and hammer - and i do mean gently, without using a press or similar I can't see how to get it in any further. Any advice?

Just put the hammer away! No tapping or hammers at all.

With YDK rubbers fitted to a YDK motor, you dust the inside of the casing with something like Mr Sheene or dash shine and it all slides home smooth with a little wiggle to locate. >>like so<<.

:'( :'(

Ah well, new motor time it is then, which one would you recommend?

Ours are >>here<<. Premium is the one we use. Budget has no warranty. Premium has no warranty if there is any evidence of a hammer being used. Cheaper, lower quality ones are on eBay.

Ah well you live and learn, tis not the end of the world. And to be fair, the Animal had few filters in it the day before it packed up, so with a new motor in it as well will be like new, and I can now strip it down to the motor in about 10 minutes!

New motor ordered (from yourselves), thanks for the help - Hammer returned the land rover tool box!

Those Samsung motors in the latest DC14 Origins are actually really good! Nice and quiet and apparently they live longer than the standard YDK YV2200
