Dyson DC24 brush rattle?
« on: February 28, 2016, 11:37:16 pm »
Hi, got a nice DC24i last night! Guy said it was making a heavy noise, and he said the brush wouldnt spin when I asked for a pic of the brushbar.

So it was only like a 2 min walk away round the corner for £25 ;D Brushbar worked! I bet he never reclined it :)) The brushbar/motor does make a bit of a loud noise though

So what is up with it? It sounds alright on carpets, but if I lift the vac head it gets louder and the end cap is fine and solid, the brushbar is perfect and doesn't wobble about

I hope the brushbar motor is okay? It works really well though, I love the DC24 it's such a fantastic mini vac  :icon_nod:

Is the black cog that spins the brushbar in good shape? Or worn in the end of the brushbar where the black cog sits?

The loud noise could be it slipping maybe

It looks okay, can't see any damage and it's the earlier style cog without the plastic spindle for the brush

I have had a few of these like that and after replacing the brush bar and end cap they are cured. Also be prepared to replace the small bearing in the ball as they wear out. Easy and cheap job though.

Cheers Sid  I quite like my DC24! Much better than my other one

It's so quiet! I don' think mine's been abused because my cyclone seal literally was pristine and the ball bearing wasn't worn out either ;D I am so glad I bought it!

Ah yes that stupid seal!  On the DC18 some have that foam seal and some have a rubber one. Same size as the DC25 too. I quite like the DC24 if you have a small place or even a caravan. Quite compact and maybe better than a DC26.

You got yousr for a good price. When I get them I replace the brushbar, end cap, small bearing and cyclone gasket pretty much every time, along with a new post motor filter. Maybe it's just luck but the brushbar motors have all been good. Unlike the DC25's!

Some DC18's have rubber cyclone seals? Wow! That would be really good and can be fitted to a DC25 I believe, as they look the same ;D

I always thought the DC25 was a bit more reliable than the DC24 especially down at the cleaner head lol. I really do like mine. Weird thing is though, I only refurbed it 2 days ago and checked the filter today. It was extremely filthy! I wonder why? We have hard floors and carpets so not much carpets, but there was no loss of suction which is good

I know someone with a 5 bedroom house, 3 storeys and they have a DC26, they have mainly hard flooring though with carpeted stairs, landings and a few rugs though

I don't think you can swap the seals over. The rubber one is not the same as the foam one which just sits there. I suppose the rubber on is a bit like the DC14 seal that has to 'fit' in. Its about 2 years since I last saw one though. All the ones since have had that foam one, but when I get another, I will take more notice of it and see if it will fit. But...who can supply the rubber one?

Oh, OK not really sure but best bet is eBay if Mvacs doesn't have any. Does a DC18 cyclone fit the DC25? I think they look identical

The foam seal we have fits the DC18 and the DC25. Or put it this way, nobody ever said they didn't fit an 18.

My mission is to try and get an 18 with the rubber seal and try the swap both ways - rubber on the 24 and foam on the 18 that had the rubber one.

I have used the foam ones MVacs sells on 18's so can vouch they fit. But I was replacing like for like.
