Dyson DC 25 motor heads cuts out after about 1 sec.
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:09:53 am »
Hi. This is the first time on this site and I appreciate your help. I have a Dyson DC 25 just out of warranty >:(. It has a new motor head as it failed about 4 months ago and Dyson sent me another. All good for 4 months until the other day when the motor head cut out after 1 sec. Vacuum was still going though. I restarted the unit , and again motor head worked for about 1 sec and then cut out (Vacuum unit still working though).

Any idea what I need to replace???
many thank
Tony (Tasmania)

Hi welcome to the site! :tiphat:

Let's start of with a common problem which is quick and easy to check;

On the  right hand side of the vacuum (facing it) by the  big rollerball there it a cover which is held on by 3 screws. Un screw those and remove the cover. There might be a wire or two snapped, this is a common problem and could potantially be why your DC25  head is cutting out. You might want to get a multi meter and check the output of the electricity coming out of the vacuum and into the head

Remove the vacuum head and check the voltage (AC) coming out. Make sure you have the vacuum reclined and switched on with the brush setting on

Hope this helps ;)

I assume you've checked for things such as hair or other objects causing resistance causing the motor to trip out as such?

I'd doubt a genuine Dyson DC25 head would fail after 4 months. The problem will be elsewhere.

There might be a wire or two snapped, this is a common problem and could potantially be why your DC25  head is cutting out. Parwaz's advice is spot on, and bear in mind that a broken wire might only be broken internally and not be able to be seen. The reset switch is another possibility. So testing the voltage out of the machine with the head off is a must and the only place to start.

If you can reply when you have done that Tony, we can go from there.

+1 for the cleanerhead loom. Did it work for 1 sec, then you tilted/moved the machine and it cut out?

There's a how to on the main Early Balls forum

many thanks to you gents of the northern hemisphere.
I have the DC25 laying flat on workshop bench. I have tested the pins in the head with the multimeter. All good.
The multimeter pins are to large to fit in the slender slots at the main unit end...so I have not test these. Nevertheless, at least 1 second of electricity must be sent to the motor head.
I also tested the little black toggle switch on the side of the ball. It is fine and keeps the current at full (on the multimeter) for the 2 minutes I tested it.
Do the DC25 have a overloader trigger???
Seeking your help please and still :'(
Gents, have a safe Easter
Tony

You need to be able to test the slots where it comes out of the machine. Then move it up and down a little and it will drop to zero is my guess.

I was able to test the unit end. Results were as follows:
Multimeter needle jumped and stayed at hard right when the red switch was on or off. Made no difference if red switch was on or off. However, when the grey switch (has the symbol brush roller) is off, needle does not move. When grey switch is on, needle jump to hard right.

I also tried to wiggle the meter pins during testing, but could not make the needle move left.
thanks
Tony

Left is nothing and right is like, full voltage... I've never had a meter that works backwards anyway.
So you have full voltage when the main switch is on and off, and nothing when the Brush Switch is off (normal) and full voltage when the switch is on.

Correct?

Well, I'm sure somebody will correct me but surely when the main switch is off, there should be no voltage going to anything after it. Including the brush circuits...

It's a Dyson, of course it can be fixed!

I'm not sure about the meter thing as I dont understand it :s but you should have mains voltage AC coming out the vacuum from the ball with the head removed. Try  moving the yolk assembly (pivot thing on the front) up and down and see if the voltage changes. If it does, then the problem is with the wiring in the vacuum. If it's fine, then there's a problem with the head.

Having the same problem with a DC25 I just picked up. I get 224V through the bottom connectors to the brush head, but motor only runs for around 1 second, I see a small spark inside brush motor.
If someone has an idea... not sure if I need to replace entire head, or if it may be a motor problem and i can just buy a new motor.
Thanks.

I've had a DC25 brushroll motor do this, I made a thread on it somewhere in the ball section.

Basically, if there's juice coming out of the PCB on the motor connections, then it's the motor one way or another
