"It fell of in my hands!"
« on: March 30, 2016, 01:06:52 pm »
While working to find out why the brush roller was stiff on my DC14, a black piece fell out and I can't see how to refit it.  On the diagrams, it is part number 17 on the Chassis and Electrical components drawing and the spring 16 is attached to it. I can see where I think it has to go, but can't see how to get it back in, not even its orientation.

Generally, I'm quite good at things mechanical, but this has me flumoxed.

Hi welcome to the site! :tiphat:

I believe this is the upright lock. It goes behind the brushbar housing. If you remove the brushbar (and belt if your machine has no clutch) and then remove the internal hose, you can un clip the brush housing by rocking it up and down as you gently pull.

Now you have access to where it sits. The two plastic pins go into the holes and they firmly click in, but the black part you have right there is a little black roller if you look closely, about 5mm  in diameter and that roller goes into the groove of the motor housing/main body

The spring goes on top ;)

Hope this helps!

Dear Parwaz7862

I think I understand what to do, I'll try it out in daylight tomorrow.

Many thanks.

Dear Parwaz7862

I've got that bit back in place, thanks. Now I have to get hold of a new set of roller bearings, then it will work again.

Thanks for your help

Well, it did just fall out in my hands, honest guv! I plead insanity (or just plain clumsiness).

On looking further at ebay, I have now found that I can get a new brush roller bar, shown as part number 37 on the DC14 brush roll, clutch and base housing assemblies drawing. As there is no further explosion of this part (offered as part number 908724-01 on ebay), does that mean that it will come complete with the spindle and bearings? The people offering them for sale seem not to know, I have been offered the option to buy it and check for myself, but the machine and I are in France and I will have to get the bits delivered to England for when I next go home and I won't then have time to order more bits before I come back.

Thanks in advance for any definitive advice.

Gotta love eBayers who know nowt.

DC14 genuine clutched brushrolls are indeed 908724-01, and do have the spindle and bearings. However, these are cheaper and we deliver to France. Just saying.  ;)

Dear MVacs

Yes, I recognise that there are pattern parts available, but I asked about the Dyson part, because that is clearly identifiable by those of you who are in the know. It is unfortunate that the sellers on ebay are less knowledgeable than they might be.

There is an ebay listing, offering an item, using the same picture as yours, for £5.95, as opposed to the Dyson part for £15.95, both p&p (to UK) included. The price for the pattern spare would, therefore, be less than half of yours, when the delivery charges are included and the genuine part would be only a couple of quid more.

Delivery to France would be great, if the French postal system was anything like as good as Royal Mail which itself, at times, is undependable. It is expensive and it can take two or three weeks to get something delivered from the UK to France, so it is generally better, I find, to get things delivered to our house in England, when it can take a couple of days up to, perhaps, seven.

All of that said, in the same way as I would prefer to buy things from a small, specialist shop on the street, even at a marginally higher price, because I can get good advice from them and, thus, better value for money, I would prefer to buy parts from organisations such as yours because, if we buy purely on price, rather than on value, we will lose access to properly informed suppliers.

Would you be prepared to negotiate on the total cost of either part, including P&P? That way, at least I would be able to demonstrate that I had achieved an improvement on value for money.

Thanks

Alan
