More on that brushroll motor.

It is a Johnson still, type U-6630. 120v, 60Hz.

For comparison, here it is next to a DC24 one.

So we are stopped in our tracks as the bottom hose has several holes in it.  :coffee:

PN is 911606-01. So I just ordered one in @ $23 delivered from the US (the US obsession with tracking puts the price up).

You can see from the photos of the hefty windings on that motor it is a proper thing. I bet they don't burn out so often. No PCB nonsense from what I can see either; it is powered from the mains. Nice fat black and white wires (US colour codes for our red/black or brown/blue) feeding it so no wires fraying and snapping aka DC40.

The machine seems to be an amalgamation of ideas from the DC14, DC18 and DC27, but redesigned with the added super duty brushroll motor and a toothed drive belt so no slippage and less snapping going on.

It actually looks like a real quality piece of kit. Everything has a satisfying click not a 'may break any second' crappy click to it. Fat brushroll, toothed drive, wide pick up slot, etc. This is a machine designed to clean carpets and not fall to bits at the drop of a hat. Here they could market it as a commercial machine too, like Sebo do with theirs.

The US is a very demanding market and stuff needs to work and be simple to maintain. Americans are more keen on carpets than we are and I think favour deep piles. I once read that they like to see the tracks left behind on the carpet by a vacuum cleaner, and that, along with deep piles, is why Dyson use wider brushroll slots there.

Up to now, my thoughts are this is the machine we should have had instead of the DC27. It would have been the logical progression from the DC14 and would have owned the market. It is a machine that takes much of what is good and durable about Dyson design. I am itching to try it when it is rebuilt!  :icon_nod:

Imagine taking a Dyson DC14, giving it to Sebo and asking them to redesign it so it is simply better and more durable. What you would get back is the DC17. It's a shame we never got this model here.

Woa! If there was only a way to easily convert a 110V motor to 240V. I hope there is but not sure if it's a pain to do. That brushroll motor has a massive cooling fan! :o

That sounds like a fantastic vacuum, I wish it was sold here seriously it would have been quite good for the UK as well I believe, DC24/25's have crappy brush motors which last like 3 years, not heard of a DC17 with a 'brush not turning' issue and that's a 2006 model vs DC24 and DC25's which are 2008 models.

At least we have the DC14 in the UK though (especially the origin), so we have a similar machine to the DC17 but more gentle on British carpets. The DC14 was launched in 2003 in the USA and 2004 in the UK so I hink the DC14 might have been intentionally a US machine to begin with.

I can imagine what the DC17 is like now what what you mentioned, sounds like a hell of a quality machine  8)  This sounds like a machine that would be perfect for my neighbours to replace  their DC33 with (which keeps needing attention).

The level 3 root cyclone technology  looks great, seen a YouTube vid of it vacuuming loads of sawdust and the filter was still spotless even after repeating he same test a few times.

Just curious, how stiff are he bristles on the brushroll vs a DC40 brushroll?
PS I like your example of giving a DC14 to Sebo and asking them to redesign it- making the DC17

MVacs, I'm really glad you are pleased with it. Your comments have made me look at my dc17 a little differently, I never really paid much attention to the build quality or how well everything clicks together. I didn't even consider the durability of the brush motor, and now that I think about it I have never seen a blown out one. It actually is a really good machine, I think I originally didn't like it because of the bad experience I had refurbing mine.

I am really looking forward to the finished product.

I think I still like the dc14 a little better though  :underchair:

Lol as much as I love the DC14, I am leaning towards the DC17 now after seeing Mvacs' comments about it

Our DC17 is finally finished.

And as we like to do a video of our museum machines working, Olga did the honours.

Awesome! How's the performance and grooming compared to the next/first best vacuum you have ever tried?

It's a very capable machine. Even in the video you can see it striping the carpet like a Sebo. It's a shame Dyson never made this machine for the UK. I could sell 220-240v DC17s hand over fist if they existed.

It's my priority to import a nice mint DC17 and DC28 someday! I agree, Dyson would have sold a lot of these in Britain because they work really well.

Here's a video showing how robust the DC17 is! In reality the brush housing only unclipped :))
