I don't know about vax but most of the ones I have seen don't have cyclones, they just look like they do.
What you can and cant make and/or copy is a huge subject. You cant copy patented tech. You can copy components and parts from larger assemblies as spare parts, more so if they comply with what is called a "must fit" exception. Which is when it must be of that design in order to fit and do as intended. You can copy certain components that are over a certain age, you can copy internal items like filters as they are not integral to the design. You couldn't copy for example a DC41 cyclone unit, but you can copy clips and small parts from it or filters and gaskets from inside it. If you used specific Dyson tech on another branded machine, yes, you have breached their IP so can expect to get sued. Its a highly specialist branch of law, is far from black and white, and it is constantly evolving. Each time a lawsuit is settled, another precedent is set. With Vax and Dyson for example see this court case. On spare parts, this covers some of it but aspects of the law have changed since then in parts manufacturers favour.
