Sebo X4 autmatic - height adjustment issue
« on: January 23, 2021, 04:46:40 pm »
Hi all,

Noticed a sudden drop in performance of our sebo x4 automatic recently and upon closer inspection the height adjust wheel seems to be permanently in the down position (minimum brush engagement).  Took apart and removed the servo motor. Took this apart (gears everywhere -  :censored:) but got it back together again, repositioned the wheel to be fully up (maximum brush engagement) and re-assembled without plugging the servo motor back in. This confirmed the vacuum is cleaning fine with a decent amount of brush engagement. Then plugged the servo back in and tried again - initially seemed ok but the height adjustment wheel has returned to being permanently down (minimum brush engagement).

Can anyone tell me how to position the sebo to guarantee the wheel (should) retract fully? Should lying it on its back with wheels in the air do this? Can't test it without knowing how to get it to extend and retract.

Has anyone had this issue before and know how to resolve? I've ordered a replacement servo but not convinced this is the problem as it did seem to manage to adjust the wheel height from in to out - it just won't do anything else now.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Might be an obvious answer but what condition is the brushroll in? If it’s worn, a new brushroll at the same time certainly wouldn’t go amiss, this can transform the vac’s performance, they really drag themselves along with a new brush fitted

Brush is fine.

There is definitely something wrong with the height adjustment. Just switched out the servo motor for a new one but that seems to do the same thing. Stays fully out so the brush barely touches the carpet.

Can someone with a working one tell me what situation the height adjustment fully retracts? I'm assuming if on a hard floor or if you lie the vacuum down on its back (so the roller is in the air with no load).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The brush retracts (wheel lowers) when the machine is upright. I wonder if your machine is thinking it’s in the upright position? There’s something to do with magnets sensing when it goes upright and they can sometimes fail- this is where it gets a bit beyond me so I’ll let someone else a bit more knowledgeable advise further

Brush is fine.

How did you establish that? Did you try another? Have a read of >this blog post<.

When you stand the machine up, is the green up light coming on and the machine raising up? And when you recline it, is the down light coming on?

I'm having the opposite problem to that article.  Mine is constantly 'too light' because the unit/brush is constantly raised up, no matter what position the unit is in (upright, reclined, carpet, hard floor).

The servo motor is working because I took it apart and put it back in in the unit/brush down position (so heavy to move due to lots of engagement with the carpet), but after a short while it extended, raising the unit up, and it has stayed that way since. None of the lights come on (other than when it extended at the start).

In this fully raised position the unit is terrible at cleaning as it is too far from the floor.

Sounds like the sensor that detects that sets the level is malfunctioning perhaps?

First off, is the little magnet in place on the side of the white pivot? By the powwr pcb, the main height sensor is there (how the machine knows its reclined or not).

Bar that, I've rebuilt the cog box before and it's really fiddly! Iirc I had it assembled on 'full height' and turned the machine on upright so it calibrated to high. Took a few goes though.
Or just wait for the servo to go full high (so the head is full low) and unplug it...

That was it. Assemble so the head is raised full, then turn on, recline, let it cycle for a bit and hope...

Otherwise my next idea is a known working pcb and motor...

Yes, that is the next thing to check. Its usually found stuck on the side power board somewhere. Small round black magnet.
