Suction power - different values
« on: July 16, 2016, 04:43:34 pm »
Hi. I'd be grateful for information regarding apparent discrepancies in the suction power between the dyson site and other sites.

As an example the DC40 and DC41 are stated on here to offer 200/255 Air Watts. On the Dyson site the figures are 100/120 AW respectively.

What is the explanation for this? Is it a different measure or has there been a reduction?

Thanks for any help

Dear Mr Rabbit,

Shortly a more qualified being will attend to your thread and provide an accurate answer.

However, in the meantime I shall offer you my answer, and that is one of the adverts in question has an error.

Kind Regards,
Rusty.

It may be that the MK2 DC41 has more? Parwaz is the bloke to answer this I expect.

It is by no means an exact science in any event. Like emissions on cars; it can be fiddled by manufacturers.

This is the King ^^^ He has made two very valid points. Mr Pawrwaz will indeed know the answer you require.
And it is indeed true manufacturers can and will make stuff up.

Ooh I feel privileged! :king:

Hi Rabbitman,

Dyson have always measured the suction power of their vacuums at the hose in Airwatts, however I believe that since the EU law for vacuums came in, Dyson started to measure the suction at the cleaner head rather than at the hose and that measurement does look a lot different but it's nothing to worry about at all.

I can also confirm that the Dyson DC41 Mk2 (700w) has 120 AW of suction at the head and 198 AW at the hose. The original old style 1300w DC41 (1300W) has 255 AW of suction at the hose and 160 AW of suction at the cleaner head IIRC.

I have owned both and I would say the DC41 Mk2 crushes the older DC41 hands down. Yes there's less suction but it isn't everything as it's all to do with the head as well as the suction.  On the DC41 Mk2 the brushbar motor spins 20% faster , the brushroll has stiffer bristles to agitate the carpet and remove ground in dirt better and there's a max/min slider for normal use and for vacuuming very soiled carpets.

The same thing applies for the DC40 but that has less suction if it's the non EU/ERP model.

Hope this helps ;)

Well, there you go the teenager of Dyson knowledge has spoken.
Quite how he retains all that knowledge to be dispensed at will is quite remarkable but he quite often brings back various models to his bedroom after nights out so he can become better acquainted. So it's no surprise he knows more about them than I do the female anatomy.

Anyway enough of that, you got your answer so I hope you stick around Mr Rabbit because this is a nice place to widen your own knowledge of house hold appliances or just to have a simple chat from now and then.

Take care.

I think Mr Rabbit forgot to set his notification settings for this Thread, it appears he hasn't been back here since his original post.

Never mind, I'm sure he'll remember to come and check sooner or later.

Indeed. That is very helpful and certainly reassuring. Many thanks everyone for your replies.

Now it's just a toss up between the Dc40 v DC41Mk2 / animal v multifloor!

The Animal and Multi floor are both identical like clones are, but they are different colours.  The animals only come with 1 extra tool- the tangle free turbine head which is designed for pet hair removal.

Are you fixed on the idea of a Dyson?

As to 40 or 41, if you could outline your usage, we could tell you better. Many people buy DC40s who probably shouldn't have done when usage is discussed.

Yes I want either the Dc40, 41 or 55. That is a good thing otherwise I would never narrow it down. I like that the edge will fit under furniture. For domestic use. Mostly carpets. Some laminate. No pets but might get a short haired cat.

I've had a DC4 for years. I replaced the motor for a third party one years ago after the original failed but have continued to be happy with it until recently when my Father clogged it up with wood shavings. Since then I.ve had it apart about 4 or 5 times with the terminals detaching. That's resolved, but it has lost suction and the motor keeps cutting out.

And the handle has snapped off.

Pushing me to DC41 is larger size and suction. Not that convinced the larger capacity makes a lot of difference though.

Options are:
DC40i £200
DC40 animal £228
DC41 animal £280 (assume this is Mk2)
DC55 £299

TBH all would probaby be fine!

Indeed, why not have a look at some Sebo's? They're much better than Dyson and around the same price, in fact they're cheaper than the newest Dysons. (Mostly)

Or if you're a millionaire buy a Kirby and you'll have happy vacuuming for the next 50 years.

PS FYI the DC55 is basically a DC41 Mk2 but in red and comes with extra tools which are sophisticated, for dusting etc ;)

Sam says the Dyson big ball he used cleans better than his Ensign SM2!  ;D

Yep so for only 20 quid more if probably go for dc55. Or 100 less for DC40i.
If both clean about the same I'll go for the cheaper
