Hi Everybody,

We moved back to my country Hungary in 2010 and brought along all of our 120V household- kitchen-appliances and electric tools as well. I also brought a 2kW auto transformer with us so, that we shouldn't have any problem using anything up to 1500 Watts.

What happened a few months after we finished settling in one day I plugged our not too old DC14 in the 230V side of the transformer by mistake and when I turned it on, the motor of the DC14 spun off like the propulsion engine of an F-16 and even though I shut the power off a few seconds later that was enough for the 230V to destroy the 120V motor.

Half of the commutator got burned off completely so badly that I could take those broken parts out completely without any effort after I took the DC14 apart.

Back then I contacted a few places for replacement motor but I found the US version (made by Panasonic) quite pricey for me shipped from the US, paying for the shipping and customs fee, so then I figured that maybe I should try to put in an EU version and I won't have to use a transformer with it either in the future.

But since I didn't get a straight answer from any source that I contacted back then I'd dropped the whole subject.

But now I want to have it fixed and decided to get more info about converting a US version to the EU one if it is possible at all.

Back then someone wrote me that besides the motor, I will also have to replace the offset motor bearing mount and the rubber fan case seal and maybe something else too, I can't really remember now what else.

I was also wondering about that the motor that got broken was a 120V/60Hz 1370W motor but the EU motors have the power of 1700W. Would that mess up (break) anything in the rest of the unit?

Does someone know the difference in the rpm of the EU and US motor?

(Right now I have all the parts in a box in the cellar so I cannot check whether the rotating brush in the head is driven directly by the motor (through belt) or just by some air turbine that is driven by the vacuum in the head area.)

Or has someone already converted a US DC14 to an EU one and it was a successful project?

I could use any help in this matter.

I could post pictures and measurements of the US motor if that would help.

Hi , I have done a few of them already. If you are lucky enough to have a ydk 120v motor then all you will need is a new 220v ydk motor and a hepa filter. I would suggest replacing the clutch or clutch belt as well.  The USA version of the dc07/14 has a much wider opening on the sole plate for better carpet agitation as well as a stiffer brush bar.

If you have  Panasonic motor on the dc14 just get the end rubbers when you get the motor.

Because the amps are so much higher on 110v the cord is well suited for the lower amp 220v power supply, Just change the plug

Sorry I only saw now that your one is a panasonic motor. Just get the rubber ends for the ydk motor. Most of us have a ton load of them lying around

Thank you for your reply, why do you think, that this website states that the YDK motor won't work with the US model:

"This motor is 220-240 volts/1600 watts and is NOT suitable for USA models."

https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/DC14-spares.html/dyson-motor-ydk-yv-dc04-dc07-dc14-dc27-dc33

They could easily said that it will only work if you also purchase the rubber ends.

But do you think, that they said that because it was easier to do so?

I'm really not trying to initiate any argument here, just trying to understand it.

A few years ago I contacted the Dyson rep. store in Budapest and in the US as well, but they were really firm on their opinion that an EU motor is not compatible with a US unit. I know, it could be also a simple marketing explanation which is typical with many multinational companies, could it be that this store has to have such statements on their website if they want to do business with Dyson? And that's it?

What puzzles me a bit is the difference in wattage between the EU and US version. Everybody knows that motors on higher voltage run more efficiently than the ones on the lower voltage, but if that was the case here, the US motors should have the higher wattage not the EU one.

Not even mentioning the new info that you just mentioned that the US version has a bit more powerfull carpet roll brush system which should draw more not less power from the motor.

So could the higher wattage of the EU motor have anything to do with some folks saying that it is not compatible with the US DC14 or it's just a marketing issue that's all?

YOu must remember that because of the high amperage in 110v power supply the wattage is limited. I will say that all the 220v motors I have seen for dyson are 1400 watt at best. I have never seen a 1600watt dc14 motor but they may exist.

The reson they say that is not compatible is that some one in the USA will buy the 220v motor and try and run it on their 110v ...... :'(

OK, then I'm not worried about the wattage anymore, about your answer to my compatibility concerns just gave me a "Duh!" moment. :duh: I've been living in Hungary for too long and forgot the trivial explanation.

About the YDK motor. Are there different YDK motors from different companies or countries therefore I should pay attention to what I'm buying or getting, or they're all the same? I don't want to get ripped off and pay the normal price but get a piece of junk. Anything particular that I should look for on a motor before I buy it?

for example here is this motor made by Dyson for:
"DYSON 0423301 90423301 MOTOR YDK DC07 YV 2200" for a DC07:
http://www.alkatreszbolt.hu/porszivo-motor/dyson-wei-e-ware-0423301-90423301-motor-ydk-dc07-yv-2200.html
for 60 euros.

Should this work in my DC14? (DC14s were never sold in Hungary, that's why I'm guessing that the DC07 motor might work for me, or maybe I'm wrong and should get one that was made for DC14 possibly from somewhere in the EU?

The reason we say not for USA models is to stop Americans buying them for 110v machines in the USA.

If you add to cart the rubbers as well, and change the plug as advised above, you are good to go.

Choose the Premium motor or the genuine YV2200 one. The budget ones are budget for a reason. The cart will calculate delivery to Hungary during checkout.

Well, today I put the US version of DC14 together with the EU motor and it works great!

These are the measurements:
disengaged:                       1218W, 228V  5,5A
engaged with brush roll off: 1233W
engaged with brush roll on: 1280W

...even though the label on the new motor says 240V/1600W. But it's OK, it is working great.

The only thing bothers me a bit that I couldn't figure out where to put two small springs that were in the same box with all the parts that I put everything in 6 years ago. It is possible that these springs just simply fell into the box anytime since it was open all along in the cellar.

I attached a picture of these springs here, could any of you tell me whether they are from the DC14 or somewhere else?

While I was assembling the vacuum cleaner I did notice a similar sized coil spring in the bottom section of the unit, so it is there.

Number two is from a clothes peg.

Number one looks like the spring from the wand handle release clip.

Thanks a bunch for your answer, the clothes peg gave me a "DUH!" moment, but the coil spring in fact was for the dustbin release button but your answer pointed me to the right direction i.e. the dustbin kept falling out earlier this afternoon and it puzzled me a bit because nothing seemed wrong with the release button, but now the coil spring fixed that problem too.

Well, I think I'm done with this project, thank you guys for all the help, my DC14 is back in business!  :)
